Catholicos or Patriarch of Armenia (338-439), otherwise known as ISAACTHE GREAT and sometimes as PARTHEV owing to his Parthian origin. He wasson of St. Narses and descended from the family of St. Grergory theIlluminator. Left an orphan at a very early age, he received inConstantinople an excellent literary education, particularly in theEastern languages. After his election as patriarch he devoted himself tothe religious and scientific training of his people. Armenia was thenpassing through a grave crisis. In 387 it had lost its independence andbeen divided between the Byzantine Empire and Persia; each division hadat its head an Armenian but feudatory king. In the Byzantine territory,however, the Armenians were forbidden the use of the Syriac language,until then exclusively used in Divine worship: for this the Greeklanguage was to be substituted, and the country gradually hellenized inthe Persian districts, on the contrary, Greek was absolutely prohibited,while Syriac was greatly favoured in this way the ancient culture of theArmenians was in danger of disappearing and national unity was seriouslycompromised. To save both Isaac invented with the aid of St. Mesrop, theArmenian alphabet and began to translate the Bible; their translationfrom the Syriac Peshito was revised by means of the Septuagint, and even,it seems, from the Hebrew text (between 410 and 430). The liturgy also,hitherto Syrian was translated into Armenian, drawing at the same time onthe Liturgy of St. Basil of Caesarea, so as to obtain for the new servicea national colour. Isaac had already established schools for highereducation with the aid of disciples whom he had sent to study at Edessa,Melitene, Byzantium, and elsewhere. Through them he now had the principalmasterpieces of Greek and Syrian Christian literature translated, e.g.the writings of Athanasius, Cyril of Jerusalem, Basil, the two Gregorys(of Nazianzus and of Nyssa), John Chrysostom, Ephrem, etc.
Armenian literature in its golden age was, therefore, mainly a borrowedliterature. Through Isaac's efforts the churches and monasteriesdestroyed by the Persians were rebuilt, education was cared for in agenerous way, the pagan worship of Ormuzd which Shah Yezdigerd tried toset up was cast out, and three councils held to re-establishecclesiastical discipline. Isaac is said to have been the author ofliturgical hymns. Two letters, written by him to Theodosius II and toAtticus of Constantinople, have been preserved. A third letter addressedto St. Proclus of Constantinople was not written by him, but dates fromthe tenth century. Neither did he have any share, as was wrongly ascribedto him, in the Council of Ephesus (431), though, in consequence ofdisputes which arose in Armenia between the followers of Nestorius andthe disciples of Acacius of Melitene and Rabulas, Isaac and his churchdid appeal to Constantinople and through St. Proclus obtained the desiredexplanations. A man of enlightened piety and of very austere life, Isaacowed his deposition by the king in 426 to his great independence ofcharacter in 430 he was allowed to resume his patriarchal throne. In hisextreme old age he seems to have withdrawn into solitude, dying at theage of 110. Neither the exact year nor the precise month of his death isknown, but it seems to have occurred between 439 and 441. Several daysare consecrated to his memory in the Armenian Church.

General Notes: THE NAME OF KHAN KUBRAT first appeared in Byzantine chronicles about 632when his tribe, the Unogonduri, threw off the Turkic oppression. Hesucceeded in uniting the Bulgar tribes in the lands north of theCaucasus, between the Kuban, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. For aboutthree centuries the Bulgars roamed the steppes of today's Romaniafighting with the neighboring nomadic tribes. Huns, Khazars and Turkicpeoples invaded the lands of the Bulgars. And the Bulgar flag, ahorsetail on a spear, was often seen cutting into enemy ranks duringtheir raids into Byzantium in the Balkans.
Khan Kubrat was the first to put a stop to the care-free (pillaging ofbarbarian raids. This Bulgar chief from the House of Dub felt vaguelythat in such crucial times the) were in need of unity. With foresight,patience and a statesman's will he laid the foundations of a military andtribal alliance. Its capital was Phanagoria on the Taman Peninsula.Byzantine chroniclers referred to it as Great Bulgaria. In this prototypeof a medieval state Khan Kubrat tied kinship and tribal chiefs' ambitionsinto an involved but historically justified knot, creating conditions fordevelopment and growth.
With time the nobles came to understand the Khan's insight: only a statesystem similar to that of Byzantium might unite the Bulgar tribes. Kubratmade peace with the mighty empire and was awarded the title of patricianby Emperor Heraclius. With the title, accompanied by generous gifts, thebasileus was hoping to keep the powerful Bulgarian ruler on his side.
Peaceful relations with Byzantium allowed the Khan to defend theindependence of Great Bulgaria against continual Khazar attacks. Thestate of Khan Kubrat, who is also mentioned as Kurt in the Name List ofBulgarian Khans, spread from the Kuban in the east to the rivers Donetsand Dnieper in the north and west and to the Sea of Azov and the BlackSea in the south.
There is a legend saying that as the Khan was dying, he ordered his sonsto fetch a bundle of sticks and told them to break it in two. When noneof the sons managed to break the bundle, the Khan took the sticks andbroke them one by one with his feeble hands. The sons understood theirfather's message: their strength depended on their unity. The Byzantinechroniclers Theophanes and Nicephorus wrote that Kubrat's bequest to hissons was to preserve the unity, "so that they would dominate everywhereand never become other peoples' slaves". The Khan died some time after651 as a powerful and respected ruler. The five sons, however, went theirseparate ways and Great Bulgaria gradually fell apart.
The firstborn son, Batbayan (Bayan), stayed in his native land and wassoon subdued by the Khazars. The second son, Kotrag, founded a state inthe confluence of the Volga and the Kam, which survived until thebeginning of the 13th century. Kuber led part of the Bulgars to Pannoniaand settled in Macedonia. Altsek and his group of Bulgars reached Italy.
The fifth son, Asparukh, was elected to further the work of his father.He led one of the Bulgar tribes west to the Danubian delta where he laidthe foundations of the Bulgarian state, which was to survive for 13centuries. By so doing, Asparukh (or Isperikh) fulfilled the bequest ofhis father.
