RICHARD FITZALAN ARUNDEL, 4TH EARL OF SURREY, (b.1346 - - d. Sept.21, 1397, London, England) was one of the chief opponents of Richard II.

He began as a member of the royal council during the minority ofRichard II and about 1381 was made one of the young king's governors.About 1385 he joined the baronial party led by the King's uncle. ThomasWoodstock, duke of Gloucester, and in 1386 was a member of the commissionappointed to regulate the kingdom and the royal household. As admiral ofthe west and south he gained a victory over the French and Spanish andtheir allies off Margate in 1387.

Then came the King's futile attempt to arrest Arundel, which wasthe signal for the outbreak of hostilities. The Gloucester factionquickly gained the upper hand, and Arundel was again a member of theroyal council. After a personal altercation with the King of Westminsterin 1394, Arundel underwent a short imprisonment. In 1397 he was involvedin a conspiracy against Richard II and was beheaded on Tower Hill.

This lord having adhered to the interest ofthe Queen, Mortimer, and Prince Edward, afterwards the third of thatname, furnished "the only precedent," says Smith, "of a peer being triedby knights, as the peers would have been both judges and jurors." Hefirst assumed a mitre for his crest. He was summoned to parliament from1329 to 1360. He had issue by his 1st wife, besides his heir, three sons,who d. s. p., and one dau., Joan, wife of Sir Reginald Cobham; by his 2ndwife, had had, with three sons, who d. s. p., a 4th, John, ancestor ofthe Berkeleys of Beverstone.
