This connection is VERY SHAKY. Most sources say the fate of Boadicia'stwo daughters, after the Romans defeated the Iceni in 60 A.D., is notknown. Most believe they were killed in, or after, the battle--or,possibly, took poison with their mother.
Smallwood (Volume II, p. 161) says her source for this marriage is"Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons" (1959) by Carr P. Collins Jr.And Pfafman cites Smallwood as one of the sources for his book. Ergo,Collins probably is the source for this information.
Kraentzler, however, in line 1812 also has Meric married to N.N.,daughter of Boadicea. He does not name Boadicea's husband, which hecertainly should have been able to find.

From his father, Hormizd inherited warsagainst the Byzantine Empire and the Turks. Though negotiations for peacehad begun with the Byzantine emperor Maurice, Hormizd declined to cedeany of his father's conquests.
In 588 his general, Bahram Chubin, defeated the Turks but in 589 wasbeaten by the Romans. When Hormizd dismissed Bahram, the general rebelledwith his army; an insurrection followed. Hormizd was deposed and killed, and his son was proclaimed king as Khosrow II.

Constantine the Great (about AD 274-337), Roman emperor (306-37), thefirst Roman ruler to be converted to Christianity. He was the founder ofConstantinople (present-day Istanbul), which remained the capital of theEastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire until 1453.
Early Life
Constantine was born Flavius Valerius Constantinus at Nis, in what is nowSerbia, son of the commander Constantius Chlorus (later Constantius I)and Helena (later Saint Helena), a camp follower. Constantius becameco-emperor in 305. Constantine, who had shown military talent in theEast, joined his father in Britain in 306. He was popular with thetroops, who proclaimed him emperor when Constantius died later the sameyear. Over the next two decades, however, Constantine had to fight hisrivals for the throne, and he did not finally establish himself as soleruler until 324.
Following the example of his father and earlier 3rd-century emperors,Constantine in his early life was a solar henotheist, believing that theRoman sun god, Sol, was the visible manifestation of an invisible“Highest God” (summus deus), who was the principle behind the universe. This god was thought to be the companion of the Roman emperor.Constantine's adherence to this faith is evident from his claim of havinghad a vision of the sun god in 310 while in a grove of Apollo in Gaul. In312, on the eve of a battle against Maxentius, his rival in Italy,Constantine is reported to have dreamed that Christ appeared to him andtold him to inscribe the first two letters of his name (XP in Greek) onthe shields of his troops.
The next day he is said to have seen a cross superimposed on the sun andthe words “in this sign you will be the victor” (usually given in Latin,in hoc signo vinces). Constantine then defeated Maxentius at the Battleof the Milvian Bridge, near Rome. The Senate hailed the victor as saviorof the Roman people. Thus, Constantine, who had been a pagan solarworshiper, now looked upon the Christian deity as a bringer of victory.Persecution of the Christians was ended, and Constantine's co-emperor,Licinius, joined him in issuing the Edict of Milan (313), which mandatedtoleration of Christians in the Roman Empire. As guardian ofConstantine's favored religion, the church was then given legal rightsand large financial donations.
Sole Ruler
A struggle for power soon began between Licinius and Constantine, fromwhich Constantine emerged in 324 as a victorious Christian champion. Nowemperor of both East and West, he began to implement importantadministrative reforms. The army was reorganized, and the separation ofcivil and military authority, begun by his predecessor, Diocletian, wascompleted. The central government was run by Constantine and his council, known as the sacrum consistorium. The Senate was given back the powersthat it had lost in the 3rd century, and new gold coins (solidi) wereissued, which remained the standard of exchange until the end of theByzantine Empire.
Constantine intervened in ecclesiastical affairs to achieve unity; hepresided over the first ecumenical council of the church at Nicaea in325. He also began the building of Constantinople in 326 on the site ofancient Greek Byzantium. The city was completed in 330 (later expanded),given Roman institutions, and beautified by ancient Greek works of art.In addition, Constantine built churches in the Holy Land, where hismother (also a Christian) supposedly found the True Cross on which Jesuswas crucified. The emperor was baptized shortly before his death, on May22, 337.
Evaluation
Constantine unified a tottering empire, reorganized the Roman state, andset the stage for the final victory of Christianity at the end of the 4thcentury. Many modern scholars accept the sincerity of his religiousconviction. His conversion was a gradual process; at first he probablyassociated Christ with the victorious sun god. By the time of the Councilof Nicaea (325), however, he was completely Christian, but stilltolerated paganism among his subjects. Although criticized by his enemiesas a proponent of a crude and false religion, Constantine strengthenedthe Roman Empire and ensured its survival in the East. As the firstemperor to rule in the name of Christ, he was a major figure in thefoundation of medieval Christian Europe.

General Notes: 1 NAME THEODOSIUS I the Great Emperor of /Rome/
Roman emperor of the East (379/95) and emperor of the West (394/95), sonof Theodosius, the general of Valentinian I. He became (375) militarygovernor of Moesia, but following the execution (376) of his father heretired to Spain. He remained there until Emperor Gratian chose him torule the East after the defeat and death (378) of Valens in the battle ofAdrianople.
Theodosius, whom Gratian made co-augustus in 379, took up arms againstthe Visigoths, who were plundering the Balkan Peninsula. By 381 he hadachieved an advantageous peace, permitting the Ostrogoths to settle inPannonia and the Visigoths in N Thrace. In return he secured theirservices as soldiers, and soon Gothic influence predominated in the army.In 383, Gratian was murdered; Theodosius was forced to recognize theusurper, Maximus, as emperor in the West outside Italy, where Gratian'sbrother and legal successor, Valentinian II, held authority.
When Maximus seized Italy, Theodosius attacked him, put him to death(388), and restored Valentinian. But Valentinian's Frankish general,Arbogast, assumed the power in Gaul, and in 392, Valentinian, who hadsought to recover Gaul, was strangled, perhaps on the order of Arbogast, who installed the puppet emperor Eugenius.
Theodosius again went to Italy. In 394 he met a large army commanded byArbogast and Eugenius and consisting mostly of pagan barbarians. Defeatedon the first day of battle, he refused to retreat, and on the followingday, with the battle cry -Where is the God of Theodosius, won aresounding victory. Eugenius and Arbogast were slain. Having previouslynamed his son Arcadius as his coemperor in the East, he now proclaimedhis younger son, Honorius, as his coemperor in the West.
Theodosius died the following year, and the Roman Empire remained dividedinto West and East. The reign of Theodosius is most notable for itsprominence in the history of the Christian Church. Baptized in 380,Theodosius soon afterward issued an edict condemning Arianism and makingbelief in the Trinity the test of orthodoxy; subsequent edictspractically extinguished Arianism and paganism within the empire. Underhis direction the First Council of Constantinople was convened. The mosteminent church figure of his reign was Saint Ambrose, bishop of Milan. When Theodosius ordered a massacre in Salonica to punish the citizens fora rebellion against the garrison, he had to humble himself in thecathedral of Milan before Ambrose lifted his excommunication.

68403973645318. Eparchius Avitus, Emperor Of ROME Bishop Of Piacenza-[27786],2,7,8,9,43 son of Agricola Senator Of ROME -[29314], was born about 395 in Auvergne, Gaul and died after 456 after age 60.
General Notes: Avitus had a distinguished civil and military career. Around his earlytwenties, ca.415/420, he undertook a civic mission to the Master ofSoldiers, and later emperor, Constantius, and early in his life he formedclose contacts with the Visigothic court at Toulouse. He then servedunder Flavius Aëtius in several military posts, and by 437 may have risento the office of Master of Soldiers in Gaul. Subsequently, he rose tobecome Praetorian Prefect of Gaul, perhaps ca. 439-440, in which capacityhe was able to renegotiate the treaty with the Visigoths. He thereforeprovides an unusual example of a person obtaining both civil and militaryoffices of very high rank. Avitus then seems to have indulged in the lifeof leisure to which every senator purported to aspire. Then, in 451, as acivilian, Avitus was influential in gaining the aid of the Visigothsagainst Attila and the Huns, who were subsequently defeated at the Battleof the Mauriac Plain. But he then returned to his estate, calledAvitacum, at Clermont.
In 455, Avitus was appointed magister militum praesentalis ("Master ofSoldiers in the Presence") by the short-lived emperor Petronius Maximusand was sent as an ambassador to the Visigoths, presumably to reconfirmthem in their federate status. Assisted by a certain Messianus, he wassuccessful. Sidonius recalled,
"The chiefs of the Visigoths were letting loose the war they had planned, when suddenly their fury was checked by tidings that Avitus, armed withan imperial writ, was already entering the home of the Goths, and, havinglaid aside for a little the pomp of the Master's office, had taken uponhimself the authority of an ambassador.... The king and the Master tookthe stand together, the master with confident look, while the other ...sued for clemency... " (Carm.7.399-434: trans. Anderson, 1.153-155).
ACCESSION After the news arrived of Maximus' death on 22 May and of theensuing Vandal sack of Rome, Theoderic urged Avitus to assume the purplehimself, asserting,
"We do not force this on you, but we say to you: With you as leader, I ama friend of Rome; with you as Emperor, I am her soldier. You are notstealing the sovereignty from anyone; no emperor holds the Latian hills,a palace without a master is yours... I would that your imperial diademmight bring me the means to do your service. My part is but to urge you,but if Gaul should compel you, as she has the right to do, the worldwould cherish your rule..."(Sid.Apoll. Carm. 7.510-518: Anderson trans.,1.163).
One might suspect, of course, that Theoderic's goals were not merelyaltruistic, and that he might have seen some benefits for himself and hispeople if Avitus were to become emperor.
Theoderic then seems to have accompanied Avitus to Arles, for Marius ofAvenches reported, "Avitus was raised emperor in Gaul, and Theodoric, king of the Goths, entered Arles in peace with his brothers" ("levatusest Avitus imperator in gallias. Et ingressus est Theodoricus rexGothorum Arelatum cum fratribus suis in pace": nos.1-2). This ceremonialarrival of the Gothic royalty would have been a far cry from pastoccasions when the Goths had attempted to seize Arles by force of arms.
The requisite Gallic support was soon forthcoming. At a meeting of the"Council of the Seven Provinces" at Beaucaire, just outside Arles, thedecision is made to name Avitus emperor, and three days later, on 9 or 10July, the ceremony was carried out. Sidonius continued,
"Then a great clamor filled the hall of Beaucaire... Place, hour, and dayare declared auspicious for the assumption of empire... The lords of theland assemble in haste and with the soldiers all around set him on amound. There they crown their sorrowing chief with a torque and presenthim with the insignia of sovereignty... "(Carm.7.571-579: Andersontrans., 1.167).
Other sources are more concise. Hydatius tersely reported, "In this year,Avitus, a citizen of Gaul, was named emperor by the Gallic army and bythe notables, first at Toulouse, then at Arles" ("ipso anno, in GalliisAvitus, Gallus civis, ab exercitu Gallicano et ab honoratis, primumTolosae, dehinc apud Arelatum Augustus appelatus est": Chron.163). TheAuctuarium Prosperi hauniensis stated, "After the murder of Maximus cameAvitus, and, situated in Gaul at Arles, he assumed imperial authority on9 July" ("post Maximi caedem Avitus ac situs in Galliis apud Arelasimperium sumpsit VII id. Iulias": no.5); the Fasti vindobonenses prioresgive a slightly different date, "and Avitus was acclaimed emperor in Gaulon 10 July" ("et levatus est imp. in Gallis Avitus VI idus Iulias":no.575). Cassiodorus noted simply, "After Maximus Avitus assumed imperialauthority in Gaul" ("Post Maximus Avitus in Gallia sumit imperium":no.1264).
It also would seem that Avitus was recognized by the Senate in Rome wellbefore his actual arrival there. Victor of Tonnena, for example, recorded, "On the seventy-fifth day after the [Vandal] capture [of Rome],Avitus, a man of complete simplicity, assumed the imperial power in Gaul"("huius quoque captivitatis LXXV die Avitus vir totius simplicitatis inGalliis imperium sumit": s.a.455). Victor's date, which works out to 5August, does not correlate with any of the other dates for Avitus'acclamation; perhaps it is the date his rule was acknowledged by theSenate in Rome; it is far too late, however, to be the date that news ofhis accession arrived in Rome. And Hydatius noted, "He was summoned andaccepted as emperor by the Romans" ("a Romanis et evocatus et susceptusfuerat imperator": Chron.166; cf. 163, "Romam pergit et suscipitur"),which likewise could indicate that Avitus was recognized in Rome beforehis actual arrival in Italy. Such a conclusion also could be inferredfrom the Italian failure to name a different successor.
Avitus spent over three months in Gaul consolidating his resources inpreparation for establishing his court in Rome. His authority was basedlargely on the support of the Goths; Sidonius recalled, "You knew that itwas not possible to hide from the Gauls that with you as emperor, theGoths would be at their service" (Carm. 7.520-521). He seems to haveraised other contingents of barbarian troops as well, all in preparationfor his advance into Italy.
The Auctuarium Prosperi then continues, "And he entered Italy with hiscomrades in this appropriated honor on 21 September" ("Italiamque cumpraesumpti honoris collegiis ingressus XI k. Oct.": no.7). An anti-Avitusbias can already be seen in the choice of words of this Italian source. It probably was on this journey that Avitus undertook some kind ofinitiative in the Danubian area. Sidonius recalled, "And his march alonerecovered the Pannonias, lost for so many generations" (Carm. 7.589-690).Now, at this time the Danubian provinces were still in an uproarfollowing the disintegration of the Hun Empire after the Battle of theNedao River in 454. Avitus could have accomplished little of consequencehere, especially as most of this territory was under the jurisdiction ofthe eastern emperor anyway. But it may be that Avitus took theopportunity during his journey at least to restore imperial authority inupper Danubian provinces such as Noricum, an area where Avitus hadcampaigned in his youth (Sid.Apoll. Carm. 7.233). Before his arrival atRome, Avitus also seems to have stationed Remistus, a Visigoth whom hehad made Patrician and Master of Soldiers, at Ravenna with a force ofGoths. After the murder of Aëtius in 454, this office seems to have leftvacant by both Valentinian III and Petronius Maximus out of a fear that asuccessor would inherit Aëtius' influence over the state. In this, itwould turn out, they were only too correct.
REIGN If Avitus were going to be able to consolidate his authority, hewould have to conciliate several possible sources of opposition, including: 1) the Vandals, fresh from their sack of Rome; 2) Marcian(450-457), the legitimate emperor in Constantinople; 3) Majorian andRicimer, the commanders of the Italian army; and 4) the Italian senators, who would have looked askance at any "foreign" emperor, and who wereaccustomed to controlling the high offices of state in their owninterest.
One of Avitus' first actions was to seek recognition from Marcian.Hydatius, for example, reported, "Avitus sent ambassadors to Marcianregarding a sharing of the rule" ("Per Avitum ... legati ad Marcianum prounanimitate mittuntur imperii": Chron.166). It is unclear whether or notMarcian ever did accept Avitus. Hyatius does in fact claim, "Marcian andAvitus make use of the principate of the Roman Empire in concord"("Marcianus et Avitus concordes principatu Romani utuntur imperii":Chron. 169). But other considerations suggest that this "concord" mighthave fallen short of actual recognition. The clearest evidence againstrecognition is that in 456 the east and west each had their own consuls,Fl. Varanes and Fl. Iohannes in the east, and Avitus himself in the west, and neither recognized the other's.
As for the Vandals, Marcian had already taken it upon himself to try todeal with them. The contemporary Byzantine historian Priscus recounted,
"After Gaiseric sacked Rome and while Avitus was ruling, Marcian, theemperor of the eastern Romans, sent ambassadors to Gaiseric, the ruler ofthe Vandals, requesting that he keep away from the land of Italy... And,having accomplished nothing, the ambassadors returned to the east, forGaiseric heeded none of the commands from Marcian..." (fr.24).
Avitus, too, attempted to deal with the Vandals by diplomatic means. Alsoaccording to Priscus, he dispatched an embassy to Gaiseric demanding thathe abide by the treaty made in 442:
"And Avitus, the emperor of the western Romans, also sent an embassyhimself to Gaiseric, reminding him of the old treaty, and saying that ifhe did not choose to abide by it, he too would make preparations, trusting to the domestic forces and the support of his allies" (fr.24).
The "domestic forces" presumably consisted of the Italian army ofMajorian and Ricimer, whereas the "allies" would have been assortedbarbarian federates that Avitus brought from Gaul. By this time, moreover, any Vandal raiding would have been terminated by the end of thesailing season in November.
Avitus also was engaged in activities in Spain. Hydatius notes, under theyear 455, "Count Fronto was sent by the emperor Avitus as ambassador tothe Suevi." But the primary imperial initiatives in Spain were in thehands of Avitus' ally, the Visigothic king Theoderic II. Hydatiuscontinued,
"Likewise, ambassadors also were sent to the same people by Theoderic, king of the Goths, because he was loyal to the Roman Empire, in orderthat they might preserve the things promised in their sworn treaty withhim just as with the Roman Empire, because they were joined in a singletreaty of peace... ("similiter et a rege Gothorum Theodorico, quia fidusRomano esset imperio, legati ad eosdem mittuntur, ut tam secum quam cumRomano imperio, quia uno essent pacis foedere copulati, iurati foederispromissa servarent...": Chron. 170).
In this instance, Theoderic played upon his professed loyalty to Avitusand the imperial government and claimed to be acting in the name of theRoman state. When the Suevi replied by invading the Roman province ofTarraconensis, the Visigoths fulfilled their role as loyal federates:"Theodoric, king of the Goths, entered Spain with a huge army of his own,at the desire and command of emperor Avitus" ("Hispanias rex GothorumTheodoricus, cum ingenti exercitu suo et cum voluntate et ordinationeAviti imperatoris": Hydatius, Chron. 173). In 456, the Suevi weredevastatingly defeated at the Battle of the Urbicus River, and -- claimsto be acting in the name of the Roman government aside -- the Visigothicconquest of Spain had begun.
Meanwhile, for Avitus in Rome the year 456 had begun auspiciously. On 1January, Avitus entered the consulate like any emperor beginning hisfirst full year of rule. Sidonius, only about twenty-three years old, delivered the panegyric (Carm.7) and as a consequence had a statueerected in own his honor in the Forum of Trajan. Sidonius' poem, however,or at least its published version, only covered Avitus' career up to hisaccession. Addressing Rome, it concluded:
"He will restore Libya to you a fourth time in chains... it is easy tofeel sure even now of what he can do by waging war, how he shall, timeand again, bring nations under your yoke... that man who, as a subjectshrank from the glorious omens of sovereignty... But now be of good cheerwith such a man for emperor... Lo, this prince of riper years shall bringback youth to you whom child-princes have made old" (Carm.7.587-598:trans. Anderson, p.169)...
Even if Sidonius' rosy sentiments lifted Roman morale, they did nothingto deal with the very real problems that Avitus faced.
Meanwhile, early in the year, it seems, Marcian sent another embassy toAfrica:
"And Marcian sent to Gaiseric further letters and the ambassador Bleda, who was a bishop of the heresy of Gaiseric... When he arrived in hispresence and realized that Gaiseric was not going to give heed to hisembassy, he broke forth into headstrong words, saying that it would notprofit him if, carried away by his present prosperity, he should beprepared to rouse the emperor of the eastern Romans to war against him...But neither the reasonableness of the words spoken before in the embassynor the fear of threats induced Gaiseric to think moderately, for hedismissed Bleda without success, and dispatching a force again to Sicilyand to the neighboring part of Italy, he ravaged it all "(fr.24).
These renewed raids probably occurred in March, with the reopening of thesailing season. They provided Avitus with a means for keeping at leastone of his Italian generals busy. Hydatius reported,
"At this time it was announced to king Theoderic [of the Visigoths] thatthrough Avitus a great multitude of Vandals, which had set out fromCarthage for Gaul and Italy with sixty ships, was destroyed after beingtrapped by Count Ricimer... In Corsica there was a slaughter of amultitude of Vandals" (Chron. 176-177).
Eventually, however, Avitus' Italian welcome wore thin. John of Antiochtells of his growing difficulties:
"When Avitus was emperor of Rome there was famine at the same time. Themob put the blame on Avitus and compelled him to dismiss from the city ofthe Romans his allies who had entered with him from Gaul. He also sentaway the Goths whom he had brought for his own guard, after distributingmoney to them derived from public works whose bronze fittings he sold tomerchants, for there was no gold in the royal treasuries. This removal ofadornments from their city roused the Romans to revolt" (fr.202: Gordontrans., p.116).
This report not only indicates, again, that the aforementioned "allies"were barbarian forces that Avitus had brought from Gaul, but also makesclear that Avitus' barbarian soldiery included others than justVisigoths.
DEPOSITION Eventually, this local unrest escalated into a militaryrevolt, led by Majorian and Ricimer. It may be that the Italian highcommand, heartened by its recent victory over the Vandals and havingthrown off the malaise of 455, was ready to reassert its own authority.Early in the fall of 456 Avitus was forced to depart Rome and attempt toreturn to Gaul. According to John of Antioch (fr.202):
"Majorian and Ricimer openly rebelled against Avitus, for they no longerfeared the Goths, and Avitus, fearing internal disturbances and thehostilities of the Vandals, left Rome on the road to Gaul. Attacking himon the road, Majorian and Ricimer compelled [Avitus] to flee to a holyprecinct, renounce his office, and remove his royal raiment. Majorian andhis company did not withdraw until Avitus died of starvation. He had heldthe imperial office for eight months. Some say he was strangled. This wasthe end of Avitus' life and reign" (fr.202: Gordon trans., p.116).
John's account, however, has some problems. The length he gives forAvitus' reign is far too short, and he also expresses some uncertaintyabout the manner of Avitus' death, providing two different versions. Healso leaves out some crucial information. Other sources help to clear upsome of these inconsistencies.
For one thing, it would appear that an initial encounter between therebels and Avitus' forces took place at Ravenna. The Fasti vindobonensespriores note, "The Patrician Remistus was killed at the Palace in Classis[at Ravenna] on 17 September" ("occisus est Remistus patricius in PalatioClassis XV kl. Octob.": no.579; cf. Auctuar. Prosp. haun. no.1, "Remistuspatricius in Classe peremptus interiit XV k. Oct."). Remistus, whoclearly had been a partisan of Avitus, then was replaced as Patrician andMaster of Soldiers by Messianus, who had assisted Avitus in theconciliation of the Visigoths the previous year.
Avitus, meanwhile, had attempted to return to Gaul, doubtless with theintention of reassembling the troops that he had dismissed earlier.Hydatius recalled that in 456 the tribune Hesychius arrived in Galliciain Spain, and announced that "as was noted above, a multitude of Vandalshad been slain in Corsica, and that Avitus had gone from Rome to Arles inGaul" ("id quod supra, in Corsica, caesam multitudinem Vandalorum, etAvitum de Italia ad Gallias Arelate successisse": Chron.177). If takenliterally, this would mean that Avitus actually returned to Gaul afterhis retreat from Rome. This is, of course, possible, but it may be thatHesychius left for Spain only knowing that Avitus had departed Romeintending to return to Gaul, without actually knowing whether or not hehad actually arrived there.
What is clear is that a month after the skirmish at Ravenna -- a periodthat would in fact have been long enough for Avitus to travel to Arlesand then return to Italy with whatever forces he could muster -- adecisive battle was fought between Avitus and his adversaries atPiacenza. The Auctuarium Prosperi reports,
"The emperor Avitus entered Piacenza with the force of his allies, whichthe Master of Soldiers Ricimer encountered with the great strength of hisown army. After battle had been joined, Avitus fled after a greatslaughter of his own men. His life was spared and the bishop Eusebius [omMilan] changed him from an emperor into a bishop. Messianus, thePatrician of Avitus, was killed in this battle on 18 October ("ImperatorAvitus Placentiam cum sociorum robore ingressus, quem cum magna viexercitus magister militum Recimer excepit. commisso proelio Avitus cummagna suorum caede terga vertit, quem vitae reservatum Eusebius episcopusex imperatore episcopum facit. interfectus in eo proelio Missianuspatricius Aviti XV k. Novemb." (s.a.456).
The reference to the presence of Avitus' "allies", whom he clearly hadearlier dismissed, again suggests that if Avitus did not, as Hydatiusreported, actually return to Gaul, he at least was able to receivereinforcements prior to the final encounter.
As for other sources, the Fasti vindobonenses priores provide a slightlydifferent date: "And on 17 October the emperor was taken captive atPiacenza by the Master of Soldiers Ricimer and his patrician Messianuswas killed" ("et captivus est imp. Placentia a magis. mil. Ricimere etoccisus est Messiam patricius eius XVI kl. Nov.": no.580); Cassiodorussimply noted, "Avitus relinquished his power at Piacenza" ("Placentiaedeposuit Avitus imperium": Chron. 1266). And Victor of Tonnena clarifiedthat Avitus was actually made bishop of, and not merely at, Piacenza:"The Patrician Ricimer overcame Avitus; sparing his innocence, he madehim bishop of the city of Piacenza" ("Ricimirus patricius Avitum superat, cuius innocentiae parcens Placentiae civitatis episcopum facit":s.a.455).
Avitus, therefore, was stripped of his imperial dignity and forciblyconsecrated bishop of Piacenza, the first time that this novel method wasused to dispose of a deposed emperor. He had ruled for just over one yearand three months (Chron.Gall. 511 no.625, "Avitus cum eo anno uno et m.III"; Continuatio ad Prosperum, "Inpartius Avitus ann. I mens.III").
AFTERMATH AND DEATH Thus ended Avitus' reign, but not his life. As forwhat happened to Avitus later, Gregory of Tours records,
"Avitus, one of the senators and, as is clearly manifest, a citizen ofthe Auvergne, after he had become Roman emperor was expelled by thesenators and ordained bishop of the city of Piacenza when he desired toact excessively. When he learned, however, that the Senate, stillindignant, wished to take his life, he set out for the basilica of St.Julian, the Arvernian martyr, with many offerings. But the course of hislife was completed during the journey, and, having been brought to thevillage of Brioude, he was buried at the feet of the aforementionedmartyr.
Other sources, too, indicate that Avitus lived at least into 457. TheGallic Chronicle of 511, for example, notes under the year 457, "Marciandied, and Avitus was killed by Majorian, Count of the Domestics, atPlacentia" ("Marcianus obiit, et Avitus occisus est a Maioriano comitedomesticorum Placentiae": no.627-628). And Hydatius, who could serve as avirtual biographer of Avitus, is particularly emphatic, stating, underthe year 457, which he also identified as Avitus' third regnal year,"Avitus, in the third year after he had been made emperor by the Gaulsand by the Goths, loses the empire, destitute of the aid promised by theGoths, and also loses his life" ("Avitus, tertio anno posteaquam a Galliset a Gothis factus fuerat imperator, caret imperio Gothorum promissodestitutus auxilio, caret et vita": Chron. 183).
Meanwhile, back in Gaul, there occurred sometime between the depositionof Avitus in October 456 and the end of 457 another Gallic attempt toseize the throne. Sidonius makes a cryptic reference to a "Marcellanconspiracy for seizing the diadem" ("de capessendo diademate coniuratioMarcellana": Epist. 1.11.6; the manuscript reading "Marcellana" iscorrect, not "Marcelliniana" or "Marcellini", to which it generally hasbeen emended). The conspiracy somehow involved a person named Marcellus,of whom there are several attested in Gaul at this time, and it just mayhave involved an effort to put Avitus back on the throne -- the onlyother possibility, it would seem, being that an attempt was made to makesome other, unknown, person emperor.
Avitus, therefore, not only lived on into 457, but, in some quarters, continued to be recognized as emperor. He also attempted to return toGaul, although whether he actually made it there is unclear, for he soondied. And here one notes the differing roles assigned in the sources toRicimer and Majorian in Avitus' downfall. Ricimer alone is given creditfor Avitus' defeat at the the Battle of Piacenza (Auctuarium Prosperi,Fasti vindobonenses). Majorian, on the other hand, is the only individualwho is blamed for Avitus' death, at some later time: the Gallic Chronicleof 511 places the event at Placentia after the death of Marcian in lateJanuary, 457; and John of Antioch claims that Majorian either starved orstrangled Avitus after the latter's deposition. In light of Gregory'sclaim that Avitus died on the road home, one might speculate that justbefore or after reaching Gaul he may have been chased down by Majorian, who would have been intent on thwarting any Avitan revival. And Avitus'resultant death, coupled with Majorian nearby, may be what brought to anend the "Marcellan conspiracy."
EPILOGUE Avitus' brief reign was the last significant attempt in thewestern empire to reverse the trend toward the Italianization of theempire. As a Gaul, he was never popular with Italy, and he was soon facedwith opposition not only from the urban mob of Rome, but also, andpresumably more seriously, from the Italian senators as well. BehindGregory of Tours' claim that he was opposed by the senators for acting"excessively" ("luxoriose": Victorian commentators gave this wordlibidinous connotations, but that is not its primary meaning). Of course, for Italian senators Avitus' mere accession would have been excessiveenough. But what is known of his pattern of appointments to imperialoffice would also have confirmed them in this impression.
For Avitus is known only to have appointed Gauls to office. Various hintsprovided by Sidonius and others suggest that, under Avitus, officials ofthe central administration may have included the Gauls Magnus of Narbonneas Master of Offices, Rusticius Helpidius Domnolus as Quaestor of theSacred Palace, and Consentius of Narbonne as Caretaker of the Palace(cura palatii) and ambassador to Constantinople. The prestigious title ofPatrician and Master of Soldiers, moreover, was given to two Gauls,Messianus and the Goth Remistus. Remistus also would have been the firstbarbarian named to this position. Avitus seems to have been particularlyzealous about appointing Gauls to various entry-level and lower-levelimperial positions. Individuals such as Catullinus, Eutropius, Hesychius,Avitus of Cottion, Petrus, and Sidonius himself were given the juniorposition of "Tribune and Notary"; and Agrippinus and Fronto were mademilitary counts. In default of greater information, such a pattern canonly be suggestive, but given the equal lack of evidence for any Italianappointments, one might suppose that Avitus' preference for Gauls inoffice was one of the reasons for opposition against him by the Italiansenators.
Avitus' rule also provided the best opportunity for creating a coalitionbetween Romans and barbarians. But in this case, his alliance with theVisigoths fell victim to Theoderic's own successes in Spain, and theresultant Visigothic failure to send assistance when he needed it themost. Avitus' failure indicates the degree to which the trend toward thedisintegration of the western empire had become irreversible. ThomasHodgkin pronounced an eloquent epitaph on Avitus' reign: "He was thekeystone of a great and important political combination, a combinationwhich, had it endured, would certainly have changed the face of Europe, and might have anticipated the Empire of Charles the Great in favour of anobler nation than the Franks, and without the interposition of threecenturies of barbarism" (p.395).

General Notes: 1 NAME Arcadius Emperor of /Constantinople/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE APR 401
Introduction and Early Life The ineffectual life and reign of FlaviusArcadius are of considerably less importance than the quite significantdevelopments that occurred during his reign. Born either in 377 or 378 tothen general Theodosius and Aelia Flavia Flacilla, he and his youngerbrother, Honorius, ruled the eastern and western halves of the RomanEmpire respectively from 395.
Shortly after his birth, his father was raised to the imperial purple in379. Events in Illyricum with the massive influx of Ostrogothic andVisigothic peoples had resulted in the defeat of the Roman army and thedeath of the emperor, Valens. Theodosius' first task was to confront theVisigoths who had been ravaging the Balkans. Perhaps in the wake of thisdifficult and almost insurmountable task, the emperor wanted to insurethat his infant son would bear some legitimacy should he die on campaign.Whatever the reason, Arcadius was proclaimed Augustus in January of 383at the age of five or six. In the following year, his younger brother wasborn and it seems as if Theodosius initially had been interested inpreserving the theoretical position of his elder son. While Arcadiusenjoyed the status of Augustus, Honorius only achieved the office ofconsul posterior in 386. Perhaps the eastern emperor had wanted to avoidthe possible conflicts that arose earlier in the century with the familyof Constantine. Recent events in the west with the assassination ofGratian by Magnus Maximus may have also played a part: Theodosiusinitially had to leave the murder of his imperial colleague unavenged andleave the boy- emperor, Valentinian II, largely undefended. The profusionof emperors may well have been seen by Theodosius as kindling for civilwar. His own autocratic tendencies may have also meant that he saw onlyone possible successor for himself.
Nevertheless, Theodosius gave Arcadius very little independence in earlylife. When he went to campaign against Magnus in the late 380's, heplaced his son under the Praetorian Prefect of the East, Tatian, who wasthe de facto emperor in Theodosius' absence. This began a long series ofregencies for Arcadius. The strength of Tatian's position with theeastern governing class made the office of Praetorian Prefect all themore powerful in Constantinople, which in turn made it easier to dominatefuture emperors. When Theodosius replaced Tatian with the more malleableand more ambitious Rufinus in 392, he had appointed a minister who wouldcentralize even greater authority under the prefecture.
By 393, the emperor's situation had changed radically. When events in thewest demanded his attention again, Theodosius was in a much strongerposition. The ascendancy of the general, Arbogast, and his own puppetemperor, Eugenius, in the west provided Theodosius an opportunity and, indeed, the obligation to take full control of the Empire. The chance forhaving his own two sons ruling both halves of Rome not only seemedpractical and feasible, but such an arrangement would establish himselfas the head of a new dynasty. With thoughts in that direction, Honoriuswas made Augustus in 393 and accompanied his father west in the summer of394. Arcadius, although near his majority, was nevertheless placed againunder the guardianship (epitropos) of the Prefect of the East. In Januaryof 395, Theodosius the Great died and his two sons took theoreticalcontrol of the two halves of the Roman Empire.
Early Reign and the Dominance of Rufinus and Eutropius (395-399) Arcadiuswas eighteen when he assumed the throne in the east. We do not knowwhether or not he was ready for the responsibilities. During themid-380's, the young emperor had been educated in part by Themistius, afamous pagan statesman, philosopher, and speaker. In what way he affectedArcadius is impossible to say, but surely his teachings must haveincluded statecraft. Perhaps because of this influence, the new emperor'sattempt to establish himself as an independent force can be seen in aseries of laws passed at his accession. In contrast to trying to create amilitary image for himself, which would not be allowed either by Rufinusor by the eastern court, he attempted to portray himself as a piousChristian emperor. He enacted several comprehensive laws against heresyand paganism.
This was not necessarily an ineffectual strategy. By celebrating hisreligious piety, he expressed his power in the only way available to anemperor largely controlled by his ministers. He also perhaps sought togain support and power from the local governing and religious hierarchiesin Constantinople. Arcadius also perhaps thought that he was carrying onin the tradition of his father and so, by extension, might share in someof his glory. Rufinus in contrast wanted to tie himself to the emperorthrough a marriage connection to his daughter. But in April of 395,Arcadius had taken advantage of the Prefect's temporary absence to marryAelia Eudoxia, whose guardian, the general, Promotus, had been a bitterenemy of Rufinus. Arcadius had been aided in this move by his own grandchamberlain (praepositus sacri cubiculi), Eutropius, and it perhapsindicated the degree to which he wanted to be free of any regent.
But in reality, Arcadius gained little if any power. Rufinus assumed fullcontrol of the east, and the Vandal Stilicho, Theodosius' closest advisorand general, took control of Honorius in the west. The tension betweeneast and west quickly grew when Stilicho, in command of all the easternand western armies, tried to press his guardianship over Arcadius aswell. Moreover, there was considerable resentment against Rufinus in theeast for using his office to greatly enrich himself and perhaps, too, because he was a westerner. Rufinus, understanding the perils around him, acted quickly. He had Arcadius demand the return of the eastern armies atonce. Stilicho acquiesced, perhaps because the general was basing hisclaim of guardianship on his own legitimacy: to have taken control of theeast and Arcadius by force would have undermined his position there andperhaps in the west. The soldiers returned under the command of theGothic general, Gainas. With the control of the field army, it seemed asif Rufinus was going to be more thoroughly in control of the east andover Arcadius.
He did not long enjoy his victory. When Arcadius and Rufinus came togreet the armies at Hebdoman near Constantinople in November of 395, thesoldiers turned on the Praetorian Prefect and cut him down in front ofthe emperor. Whether Stilicho instigated the assassination is a matter ofsome debate, but if he did, he received no benefit from it. The armiesremained and Arcadius soon fell under the sway of other ministers.Nevertheless, despite the shock and fear Arcadius may have felt atwitnessing such a brutal murder, he probably missed Rufinus' presence notat all and even thought it might provide an opportunity to assert his ownauthority. For the bureaucracy, the death meant that maintaining civiliancontrol over the army was paramount to their own survival.
Soon thereafter, Eutropius assumed Rufinus' place in dominating Arcadius.Since the grand chamberlain could control access to the emperor andcommanded the powerful palace bureaucracy, he was well-placed to dictatewhat and whom the emperor saw and heard. Military officers--frequentlyGermanic--who dominated the western government, were held suspect byfearful and jealous civil administrators in Constantinople. Eutropiusused that fear to his advantage and froze out any access they may havehad to the circles of power. His decision to effectively eliminate themilitary's input in decision-making would eventually lead to his demise.
It is difficult to determine how popular Eutropius was either withArcadius or with the wider population. As a eunuch and a former slave, the sources generally portray him very negatively. He nevertheless seemsto have enjoyed some support from the emperor, likely aided by Eudoxiawith whom the grand chamberlain had close ties. The emperor happily tookannual vacations in Galatia, apparently upon the Eutropius' suggestion. Moreover, the chamberlain showed great personal courage and talent inleading a campaign against invading Huns in 397/8, for which he won theconsulship and the rank of patrician in the following year of 399. Healso seems to have gained considerable support from the local clergy byprocuring the patriarchate of Constantinople in 398 for John Chrysostom.
Despite Eutropius' rise to power, however, eastern policy changed little. The religious policies of Theodosius and Arcadius continued, includingthe forced closure of pagan temples in Gaza. More significantly, tensionbetween the two halves of the empire persisted as Stilicho continued topress for his position as guardian. Although Stilicho led periodic raidsinto Greece and Thrace to attack the new Visigothic king, Alaric, hisvictories were incomplete and were more likely meant to keep the Germanicpeople out of western territory. This meant, among other things, that theVisigoths were an enduring problem for the east. Eutropius in turnsupported the revolt of the Count Gildo in Africa, which was underwestern control, in an attempt to destabilize Stilicho's control andfurther eastern domains.
The failure of the revolt in 398 was the first step in Eutropius'downfall. The decision to exclude the military men of the period, particularly among the growing importance of Germanic officers, created adangerous situation. By 399, the dissatisfaction with east-west affairsand the Gildo fiasco resulted in a revolt by the Gothic count, Tribigild. He was apparently in collusion with Gainas, who had taken advantage ofthe crisis to be named chief general in the east (magister utriusquemilitiae). Gainas quickly reached an agreement with the rebel and part ofthe settlement was the dismissal of Eutropius, to which Arcadius--atEudoxia's urging--agreed. The chamberlain took refuge in the HagiaSophia, and was exiled to Cyprus. But shortly thereafter, in the autumnof 399, Eutropius was recalled, tried and executed in Chalcedon.
The Age of Eudoxia (400-404) The death of Eutropius precipitated aserious crisis. Gainas, who had wanted high office for years, now triedto force the hand of Arcadius. Having come to a quick resolution withTribigild, he moved from Thrace towards Constantinople in 400. With theGermanic troops supporting him, Gainas tried for six months to initiatehis own primacy-- including seizing the imperial palace--but whichfailed. He was forced to withdraw personally from the city to regroup andplanned to use his troops remaining there to seize the entire city. Butthey were slaughtered by the inhabitiants and he fled first to Thrace andthen to Asia. Eventually Gainas was killed by the Huns later in thatyear. His attempted coup ensured that Germanic officers would never againbe trusted by the eastern government and would forever be kept out of anyimportant decision-making roles.
The likely successor to Eutropius had been the anti-Germanic leader,Aurelianus, who had succeeded to the Prefecture of the East in 399. ButGainas had exiled him, having forced Arcadius to hand him over, andalthough Aurelianus returned triumphantly after Gainas' departure, heappears to have lost his hold over the emperor. In the meantime, AeliaEudoxia had done much to forward her own place in the government. InJanuary of 400, she had been named Augusta, a singular distinctionoffered to only three other women in the previous century. Her positionthus gained a semi-official legitimacy afforded to very few Romanempresses. It has been assumed that because of her beauty, herintelligence, and her fecundity (she bore Arcadius five children), shewas able to assert her influence to a point where she was the new powerbehind the throne.
That assessment, while held by many scholars, is not entirely accurate. While there were several events in which she played a crucial part, theywere not terribly important moments during Arcadius' reign. But becauseEudoxia was enormously wealthy, because she delivered a male heir in 401,and because she was involved in a highly publicized and drawn outpolitical fight with John Chrysostom, this belief that there was anassumption of power is based more on the notoriety of her acts than onactual control. The fact that there was no one clearly dominating thegovernment nor the emperor during this time implies perhaps that Arcadiushad more power during these five years of his reign than at any othertime.
There are several indications that he did try to improve and assert hisown position. The emperor and his court immediately came to someunderstanding with the west. The east at the very least gave Honorius andStilicho moral support in their increasing problems with Alaric. In 402,the feeling of goodwill was sealed by a joint consulship between Arcadiusand his brother. The emperor also sought to establish his own militaryprowess and Christian piety with the erection of a column set up in theHippodrome of Constantinople in 402/3. The column depicted his militaryvictory over Gainas, crowned with a capital emblazoned with the Greekletters chi-rho, symbolizing his devotion to Christ. Arcadius' son,Theodosius II, was born in 401, and was quickly made Augustus at the ageof eight months. The eastern ruler was thus interested in assuring hisown dynasty.
In all these things, the emperor was largely successful, but they werelargely overshadowed by the feud between his empress and the bishop ofConstantinople. Eudoxia had already shown herself able in pushing herinterests during the baptism of her son. The Bishop of Constantinople, however, was a much tougher opponent than her husband. John Chrysostom, astrong believer in social justice, had boorishly attacked Eudoxia andmany of her friends for the conspicuous luxury in which they lived anddisplayed themselves. At the height of these attacks, John compared theempress to Jezebel. Eudoxia in turn used her considerable influence toinflame hostility among the clergy against the bishop. Working throughBishop Theophilus of Alexandria, in 403 Chrysostom was deposed and forcedinto exile at a Church council convened by the emperor (the Synod of theOak at Chalcedon). However, there was soon such turmoil and uproar in theimperial city that the bishop was recalled a few days later. But thepublic feuding between Eudoxia and Chrysostom continued until at last shehad him banished again in 404, this time permanently. Among other things,it caused a breach between Arcadius and his brother, who had, with PopeInnocent I, tried to support Chrysostom.
Eudoxia's victory was short-lived, however. In October of 404, theAugusta died of a miscarriage. Her death was seen by some as retributionfor dismissing John. Whatever the reason, her end also signaled acomplete retreat into the background by the emperor and no furtherinitiatives seem to have been pushed by the 27-year-old Augustus.
The Final Years: Anthemius and Death (404-408) The last years ofArcadius' reign were completely dominated by his Praetorian Prefect ofthe East, Anthemius. It was perhaps fitting that when the emperor seemsto have been most retiring, the most able and energetic of his highministers came to power. Anthemius worked hard to solve a series ofgovernmental abuses, continue to push for Christianization, and securethe east from attack.
Anthemius first seems to have tried to reconcile with the west, so muchso that there was a joint consulship between Anthemius and Stilicho in405. This might have also been meant to symbolize the Prefect's newdominance, however. Additionally, a number of new laws were passed, curtailing paganism, Judaism and heresy. He tried to make use of thecontinuing problem of incoming Germanic peoples to combat the Isauriantribes which had been plaguing Asia Minor since 403. While it failed tohalt either group's incursions, it was nevertheless a practical andintelligent strategy. As a means of protecting the imperial capital,Anthemius also strengthened the walls around Constantinople. Our recordsfor the last years of Arcadius' rule are quite spotty, but the emperorhimself seems to have completely vanished, even symbolically, from thepolitical scene.
In May of 408, Flavius Arcadius died at the age of 31 of unknown causes. Our only physical description of Arcadius is heavily influenced by thegenerally low regard in which he was held. The emperor was supposedlyshort, thin and dark-complected. A more kindly correspondent describedhim as good-natured and temperate. His son succeeded him without anycontroversy and the government remained unchanged. Arcadius thus left theworld much as he entered it: without much significance and overshadowedby more powerful forces.
Assessment Despite the ineffectual nature of Arcadius and his rule, anumber of significant changes occurred during his stewardship of theeastern empire. His inability to forcefully or at least effectivelygovern meant that there were few consistent or long-range goals of hisadministration. With the exception of trying to emphasize the emperor'spiety, an important development in the history of the Byzantine monarchy,Arcadius and his ministers were for the most part simply reacting toevents.
The emperor became an even more remote figure to the general public. Evenin the capital city itself, he was rarely seen: we read in one accountthat people came running to see the emperor for the first time when hehappened to be praying in a local church. A series of "orientalizing"court practices no doubt continued in order to emphasize the symbolicseparation of the emperor from the rest of society. The hieratic, almostsemi- divine nature of the imperial person, also became a feature of theeastern ruler.
Perhaps of greatest importance was the political and cultural splitbetween east and west. With the death of Theodosius, the two halves ofthe Roman Empire increasingly went their separate ways. For the mostpart, the west was thrown back upon its own resources, unable to dealwith the problems of the fifth century. The east proved more compact andmore resilient: it largely weathered the political storms from withoutand within.
Moreover, Constantinople fully became the imperial capital of the east, aRoma nova. The emperor rarely left the city and the palace officialsbecame more influential than many of the more theoretically importantministers outside the city. Constantinople was also made anarchepiscopate and Chrysostom and others started to push strongly for itsprimacy in the east. Both public and private building projects beautifiedand enlarged the city. Under Arcadius' reign, it truly became the secondcity of the Roman Empire.
Finally, the hard stance against Germanic officers in Roman governmentbecame a central feature in the east. While the reasons for thisdevelopment were inspired largely out of fear and perhaps racism, theeastern Roman Empire did manage to avoid the largely detrimentalsuccession of Germanic generalissimos who controlled the west in thefifth century. It also encouraged the eastern rulers in the followingcentury to take hard lines against other peoples, including theIsaurians, the Huns and the Persians. Taken in all, the era of Arcadiuswas far more important than Arcadius himself. He perhaps had his father'spretensions, but none of the skills or powers necessary to leave his markon the Empire.
Sources and Bibliography There are a number of sources that treat the ageof Arcadius. The historians Zosimus (New History), Socrates(Ecclesiastical History) and Sozomon (Ecclesiastical History) offer themost complete accounts. Additionally, Bishop Synesius of Cyrene inletters and other works (On the Kingship and On Providence) specificallyaddresses a number of the problems and issues going on in Constantinopleand the imperial court at that time. The letters and homilies of JohnChrysostom are also of enormous value and tell us more about the socialhistory of the capital than any other source. Minor accounts include theChronicon Paschale and the Chronicle of Marcellinus Comes. Severalimportant saints' lives, including the Life of Porphyry, provide valuableinformation about events outside the capital. Finally, for the militaryand political organization of the Roman Empire, the Notitia Dignitatumoffers a static look at the early fifth century.

General Notes: BIOGRAPHY: Event: Ruled BET. 498 - 531 Sassanid King of Persia 1 Event:Deposed BET. 496 - 498 Sassanid King of Persia 1 2 Note: Kavadh I, alsospelled QOBAD (d. Sept. 13, 531), king of the Sasanian empire of Persia(reigned 488-496 and 498/499-531). He was a son of Firuz and succeededFiruz' brother Balash as ruler.
BIOGRAPHY: Time spent in youth as a hostage in the hands of theHephthalites after their first defeat of his father gave Kavadh valuablemilitary experience and connections, which he later turned to good use. After the deposition of his uncle Balash in AD 488, he was called to thethrone. At first he was largely dependent on the feudal chief Zarmihr(elsewhere called Sokhra), but when he contrived to eliminate thisover-powerful protector, the hostility of the nobles, with tribal unrestin Armenia and western Iran, led to his deposition in favour of abrother, Jamasp. Kavadh was incarcerated in the "Castle of Oblivion" inSusiana but escaped (in a romantic version his wife takes his place inthe dungeon) and, helped by a nobleman, Siyavush (Seoses), fled to theHephthalites. Their king arranged a marriage between Kavadh and theHephthalite king's daughter, who was a granddaughter of Firuz. He alsogave Kavadh a powerful army with which to recover the Persian throne, which Kavadh did without opposition in AD 498 or 499. Kavadh next appliedto the Byzantine emperor Anastasius I for subsidies with which to placatehis auxiliaries. Payment being refused, he led his troops againstAnatolia and seized the cities of Theodosiopolis (Erzurum) and Amida(Diyarbakir). He later returned Amida in return for a heavy indemnity.
BIOGRAPHY: When Justin I succeeded to the Byzantine throne in 518,Kavadh's main concern was to ensure the succession of his favourite son,Khosrow (later Khosrow I), by a peace agreement under which Khosrow wouldbe adopted and sponsored by the Byzantine emperor. Justin rebuffed theproposal, and a new breach resulted. About the same time, Kavadh wasdeeply influenced by the Mazdakites, a heterodox religious sect. Finallypersuaded of the danger of the Mazdakites, he had them assemble as if fora meeting and then massacred them. Kavadh died after drafting the fiscalreforms that won fame for his successor. His written testament sufficedto place Khosrow on the throne. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97, KAVADH]

68405776359488. Asparukh Khan Of The BULGARS-[27648],2,7,8,9,43 son of Kubrat, 1St Khan Of BULGARIA -[27649], was born about 618 in Eastern Bulgaria and died in 701 in Eastern Bulgaria at age 83.
General Notes: History has not been generous in terms of written evidence aboutAsparoukh. Old chronicles simply mention the son of Khan Kubrat whoacquired experience in politics and statesmanship in Great Bulgaria. Whenthe state disintegrated under pressure from the Khazars, he and hisbrothers resumed their nomadic life, rocked by the waves of migration andmilitary clashes.
It is not known for certain where Asparoukh's horsemen rode beforecrossing the Danubian delta and settling in the Ongul area (SouthernBessarabia). It is impossible to guess what made the leader head south tothe lands of mighty Byzantium. Yet in 680, while alighting from hishorse, he knew his tribe was to settle there at last.
We can only judge Asparukh by what we know of his deeds. In the 10thcentury the Khazar ruler Joseph left a written statement that thegreatest part of the Bulgars had followed Asparukh. The Name List ofBulgarian Khans says clearly that the state Asparukh founded was thedirect and the single successor to Khan Kubrat's Great Bulgaria.
The young chief and his horde sought to establish the permanent unifiedstate that Great Bulgaria had failed to become. It was in union with theSlavic tribes south of the Danube that they would succeed.
For about a century the Slavic tribes had been roaming the Byzantinelands, their burning and destruction paving the way for the founding ofthe future state. Their closeness to the Byzantine strongholds posed aserious threat to the empire. They set up large tribal alliances, amongwhich the seven Slavic tribes and the Severians, inhabiting the landsbetween the Danube and the Balkan range, were the most powerful. Theywere just a step away from statehood. They were to make that lasthistoric step together with Asparukh's Bulgars.
At the end of the 670s Asparoukh made an alliance with the Slavic tribesto fight against Byzantium. In 680 he defeated the Byzantine army andswiftly moved from the Danubian delta down to the Balkan range. And thusAsparukh founded a state of Slavs and Bulgars, binding his tribe with thetribal alliance of the seven Slavic tribes and the Severians.
In 681 Khan Asparukh invaded Thrace, seizing fortresses and towns. As theByzantines were unable to stop him, Emperor Constantine IV Pogonatus wascompelled to sue for peace, thus recognizing the new state to which hewas to pay annual tribute. Pliska, a city in today's Central Bulgaria, became the first capital of the new state.
Asparukh realized that as the new state was an alliance of tribes, itcould not be established in one fell swoop but would have to be builtover the course of several generations. The Slavs and the Bulgarsretained their self-government and the territorial autonomy of theirtribes. It is telling that in the historical sources from the end of the7th to the beginning of the 10th century the new state is referred to asa Slav-Bulgar state.
The Khan was in charge of foreign political affairs and commander of thearmy in times of war. The Slavs defended the northwestern border to theCarpathians against frequent attacks by the Avars. To the east the BlackSea coast was the natural borderline.
The Bulgars undertook the defence of the northern borders against theKhazar invasions, far beyond the Danube. The southern border along theridge of the Balkan range all the way to the Timok river was guardedagainst the Byzantine threat by the combined efforts of Bulgars andSlavs.
The Thracians who had inhabited these lands before the invasion of Slavsand Bulgars were also incorporated into the new state.
Asparukh was a daring leader who embodied the skills of politician andstatesman, diplomat and warrior. Time taught him skills very few leadersof his rank possessed. In a century when rulers cut their way into thefuture with their swords, Asparukh held out his hand to the Slavs andoffered them peace, a move which proved essential to the survival of thenew state.
The swift victory of the new state is indicative of the fact that thecombined efforts of Bulgars and Slavs made them much less vulnerable.Asparukh kept an ardent watch over the alliance and severely punished anyviolation of it. A tireless builder and a just arbitrator, he was theperfect leader of an emerging state in times when only God knows whetherpeaceful construction or military power would have better safeguarded itssurvival. This first ruler of Bulgaria died in 700 in one of the manybattles in defense of the new state.
