With a British army he set out to put an end to the persecution ofChristians forever.

The greatest of all Roman Emperors, he annexed Britain to the RomanEmpire and founded Constantinople. In the year 321 he decreed that theChristian Sunday be truly observed as a day of rest, a wonderful boon tothe toiling serfs.

His father, Constantius Chlorus, Emperor of Rome died in York. . .and there that Constantine was accepted as Emperor by the "voice of thepeople".

The decisive factor, so far as the Empire was concerned, was thereaction of the army who, on 25th July, 306 acclaimed him as "Augustus"which meant that the most powerful body of men in the outposts of theEmpire were determined to be rid of the influence of Diocletian, thetyrant, and to support Constantine. He was recognized by both west andeast.

This period of adjustment may well be described as the mostturbulent in Roman history. There was enmity within his own family,apparently centering round his wife, Fausta, the daughter of Maximian,joint ruler with Diocletian, whom he had married to strengthen hisposition in Rome. By inheriting the throne of the Ceasars he had alsoinherited all the intrigue of the Roman court. When he removed his courtto Constantinople, choosing Christian leaders as his advisers, Romereceived the "coup de grace" from which it never recovered.

Constantine is probably the most misunderstood of the Romanemperors. To some he ranks as an angel of light, because of hisproclamation of the Christian faith as the state religion. Others cannotforget how the young Augustus, made many an error of judgment. Neithercan they forget that his proclamation of Christianity led onward, at theend of his dynasty, to the formation of the Holy Roman Empire which wasyet another tyranny.

He was neither a saint nor a villain, but he deserves his place inhistory for a reason not usually given by historians, that he caused thepower of Rome to be broken, not by revolution, but by the action of theEmperor, who, from his vantage point in Britain, could see the corruptionat its heart.

Eusebius, who was his outstanding biographer, paints him in glowingcolours. In his CHURCH HISTORY he gives much detail concerning theterrible Diocletian Persecution. To him, the Emperor who put down thatpersecution and, for the first time, gave the Church encouragment, was tobe hailed as a savior.

Eusebius also tells us of his many gifts to widows and orphans, towhom he also gave dowries. His Edict Of Toleration included a decree forthe observance of both Sunday and the Sabbath, the emanciipation ofslaves, prohibition of crucifixion and prohibition of gladiatorial games.

He also passes on to us Constantine's own words, first with regardto his father, Constantius; "The former emperors I have been accustomedto regard as those with whom I could have no sympathy on account of thesavage cruelty of their character. Indeed my father was the only one whouniformly practised the duties of humanity, and with admirable pietycalled forth the blessing of God, the Father on all his actions".

His words regarding the purpose of his government are alsorevealing; "We call God to witness, the Saviour of all men, that inassuming the reins of government we have never been influenced by otherthan these two considerations, the uniting of all our dominions in onefaith, the restoring of peace to a world torn to shreds by the madness ofreligious persecution".

General Notes: BIOGRAPHY: Shapur II, byname SHAPUR THE GREAT (b. AD 309--d. 379), 10thking of the Sasanian Empire of Persia, who withstood Roman strength byastute military strategy and diplomacy and brought the empire to thezenith of its power. Early life and accession.

BIOGRAPHY: The name Shapur, meaning "son of a king," was common in theSasanian period and was often given to sons other than princes. Numericaldesignations were not used to distinguish kings of the same name;instead, the family genealogy was cited. Thus, in one inscription, Shapurstyles himself, "the Mazdah-worshipping god Shapur, king of kings of Iranand non-Iran, who is a scion of the Gods, the son of Hormizd (Ormizd II),the grandson of Narses." According to tradition, his father died beforeShapur was born, and the child was proclaimed king by the Persiannobility at his birth in 309, in preference to his brothers. (At thedeath of Hormizd II, the Persian nobles killed the eldest son, blindedthe second and imprisoned the third. The throne was reserved for theunborn child of one of the wives of Hormizd. This was Shapur, who wasthus born king. [Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1961 ed., Vol. 20, p. 473,SHAPUR II]) After a regency, he apparently took the realm into his ownhands in 325 at the age of 16. A contemporary account describes hisappearance and courage in battle: "And he himself, mounted on hischarger, and being taller than the rest, led his whole army, wearinginstead of a crown a golden figure of a ram's head inlaid with jewels;being also splendid from the retinue of men of high rank and of differentnations which followed him . . . He rode up to the gates [of Amida];escorted by the cohort of his royal guard; and while pushing on moreboldly, so that his very features might be plainly recognized, hisornaments made him such a mark for arrows and other missiles, that hewould have been slain, if the dust had not hindered the sight of thosewho were shooting at him; so that after a part of his robe had been cutoff by a blow of a javelin, he escaped to cause vast slaughter at afuture time."

BIOGRAPHY: Persecution of Christians.

BIOGRAPHY: In 337 Shapur sent his forces across the Tigris River, theuneasy frontier, to recover Armenia and Mesopotamia, which hispredecessors had lost to the Romans. Until 350 conflict raged in northernMesopotamia, with neither side a clear-cut victor. Shortly after 337,Shapur took an important policy decision. Although the state religion ofthe Sasanian Empire was Mazdaism (Zoroastrianism), Christianityflourished within its boundaries. The Roman emperor Constantine the Greathad granted toleration to Christians in 313. With the subsequentChristianization of the empire, Shapur, mistrustful of a potential forceof a fifth column at home while he was engaged abroad, ordered thepersecution and forcible conversion of the Christians; this policy was inforce throughout his reign.

BIOGRAPHY: In 358 he was ready for a second encounter with Rome and sentan ambassador to the emperor Constantius II, bearing presents and aletter wrapped in white silk.

BIOGRAPHY: This letter read, in part, "I, Sapor, king of kings, partnerof the stars, brother of the sun and the moon, to Constantius Caesar mybrother send much greeting . . . Because . . . the language of truthought to be unrestrained and free, and because men in the highest rankought only to say what they mean, I will reduce my propositions into afew words . . . Even your own ancient records bear witness that myancestors possessed all the country up to the Strymon and the frontier ofMacedonia. And these lands it is fitting that I who (not to speakarrogantly) am superior to those ancient kings in magnificence, and inall eminent virtues, should now reclaim. But I am at all times thoughtfulto remember that, from my earliest youth, I have never done anything torepent of."

BIOGRAPHY: When Constantius politely refused to hand over these lands,Shapur marched into northern Mesopotamia, this time with marked success.In 363, however, the emperor Julian led a huge army into Persia, creatinghavoc and advancing to the very gates of Ctesiphon on the Tigris, a majorSasanian city. Julian was mortally wounded in a skirmish, and hissuccessor, Jovian, was compelled to accept an ignominious 30 years' truceand surrender of five Roman provinces. Conquest of Armenia.

BIOGRAPHY: Shapur then turned his attention to Armenia. He defeated itspro-Roman ruler and attempted to force Zoroastrianism on the country. TheRomans, however, regained their influence in Armenia, and a precariousbalance between Romans and Persians existed from about 374. For fiveyears, Armenia was weakened by internecine strife, and one of Shapur'slast acts was to win it over by discreet gifts. Shapur's death in 379left Persia with its territory considerably augmented: he had pacifiedthe eastern frontier and gained control over Armenia; the Persian Empirehad never been stronger. But war with Rome had become habitual andeventually undermined the strength of the Sasanians.

BIOGRAPHY: As did the other great rulers of his line, Shapur consideredhimself an heir of the great Achaemenid Empire and strove to renew itsglory. Indeed, his letter to Constantius contains a distant echo of thewording of the inscriptions of Darius I the Great, the Achaemenid ruler,when he writes of his devotion to truth and righteousness. Shapur wascalled a god, and he lived up to this exalted status, becoming irascible,even violent, when individuals summoned to his presence appeared to payinsufficient respect to his awesome majesty.

BIOGRAPHY: The figure of Shapur survives. A large silver plate has ascene in relief that shows him hunting lions with bow and arrow, andcountless silver coins portray his face in profile. At Bishapur insouthwestern Iran, a tremendous rock-cut relief depicts him seated on athrone and witnessing a triumph of his army: in the top row he is flankedby nobles of the court, and the lower row contains soldiers who presentcaptives and trophies of victory.
