With a British army he set out to put an end to the persecution ofChristians forever.

The greatest of all Roman Emperors, he annexed Britain to the RomanEmpire and founded Constantinople. In the year 321 he decreed that theChristian Sunday be truly observed as a day of rest, a wonderful boon tothe toiling serfs.

His father, Constantius Chlorus, Emperor of Rome died in York. . .and there that Constantine was accepted as Emperor by the "voice of thepeople".

The decisive factor, so far as the Empire was concerned, was thereaction of the army who, on 25th July, 306 acclaimed him as "Augustus"which meant that the most powerful body of men in the outposts of theEmpire were determined to be rid of the influence of Diocletian, thetyrant, and to support Constantine. He was recognized by both west andeast.

This period of adjustment may well be described as the mostturbulent in Roman history. There was enmity within his own family,apparently centering round his wife, Fausta, the daughter of Maximian,joint ruler with Diocletian, whom he had married to strengthen hisposition in Rome. By inheriting the throne of the Ceasars he had alsoinherited all the intrigue of the Roman court. When he removed his courtto Constantinople, choosing Christian leaders as his advisers, Romereceived the "coup de grace" from which it never recovered.

Constantine is probably the most misunderstood of the Romanemperors. To some he ranks as an angel of light, because of hisproclamation of the Christian faith as the state religion. Others cannotforget how the young Augustus, made many an error of judgment. Neithercan they forget that his proclamation of Christianity led onward, at theend of his dynasty, to the formation of the Holy Roman Empire which wasyet another tyranny.

He was neither a saint nor a villain, but he deserves his place inhistory for a reason not usually given by historians, that he caused thepower of Rome to be broken, not by revolution, but by the action of theEmperor, who, from his vantage point in Britain, could see the corruptionat its heart.

Eusebius, who was his outstanding biographer, paints him in glowingcolours. In his CHURCH HISTORY he gives much detail concerning theterrible Diocletian Persecution. To him, the Emperor who put down thatpersecution and, for the first time, gave the Church encouragment, was tobe hailed as a savior.

Eusebius also tells us of his many gifts to widows and orphans, towhom he also gave dowries. His Edict Of Toleration included a decree forthe observance of both Sunday and the Sabbath, the emanciipation ofslaves, prohibition of crucifixion and prohibition of gladiatorial games.

He also passes on to us Constantine's own words, first with regardto his father, Constantius; "The former emperors I have been accustomedto regard as those with whom I could have no sympathy on account of thesavage cruelty of their character. Indeed my father was the only one whouniformly practised the duties of humanity, and with admirable pietycalled forth the blessing of God, the Father on all his actions".

His words regarding the purpose of his government are alsorevealing; "We call God to witness, the Saviour of all men, that inassuming the reins of government we have never been influenced by otherthan these two considerations, the uniting of all our dominions in onefaith, the restoring of peace to a world torn to shreds by the madness ofreligious persecution".

General Notes: P.J. Chandlery, (S.J.in his guidbook to Roman churches, PILGRIM WALKS INROME), tells us, "It is one of Catholic England's greatest glories tocount St. Helena and Constantine among its children, St. Helena being theonly daughter of King Coilus, who lived on freindly terms with the Romansand held of them his sovereignty".

He says, "St. Helena, inspired with a great desire to find the trueCross, on which our Lord had suffered, undertook a journey to Palestinein 326, though she was nearly eighty years of age at the time. AtJerusalem she found no mark, no tradition even among the Christians toguide her search. The heathens had heaped up a great quantiy of stonesand rubbish to conceal the place where our Saviour was buried, and theEmperor Hadrian had profaned the Holy Places and outraged the feelings ofChristians by erecting a statue of Jupiter near the Holy Sepulchre, and atemple and statue of Venus on Calvary, so as to prevent Christians fromcoming there to worship. The pious Empress ordered the profane buildingto be pulled down, the statues to be broken to pieces, the rubbish to beremoved; and on digging to a great depth the Holy Sepulchre was found".

This could be roughly true, but the site could have been lost againbefore the time of the Crusades.

Bishop Theodotus, in his PANEGYRIC ON CONSTANINE, describes theEmperor and his mother in these beautiful words, 'He was a lover of God,a lover of charity, a lover of men, a lover of goodness, and of everyperson. He went to church every morning and evening every day; he madelarge assemblies at the Holy Communion; he prayed to God with greatearnestness; he gave away large charities and gifts, and he and his houseand his mother, the God-fearing Queen Helena, feared the Lord always.'

Antony was born in Rome and educated for a short time in Greece. From 58to 56 BC he served as a leader of cavalry in Roman campaigns in Palestineand Egypt, and from 54 to 50 BC he served in Gaul under Julius Caesar.Subsequently, with Caesar's aid, he attained the offices of quaestor,augur, and tribune of the people. At the outbreak of the civil warbetween Caesar and the Roman soldier and statesman Pompey the Great,Antony was appointed Caesar's commander in chief in Italy. He commandedthe left wing of Caesar's army at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC, andin 44 BC he shared the consulship with Caesar.

After the assassination of Caesar in 44 BC, Antony's skillful oratory,immortalized by Shakespeare in the play Julius Caesar, turned the Romanpeople against the conspirators, leaving Antony for a time with almostabsolute power in Rome. A rival soon appeared, however, in the person ofGaius Octavius, later the Roman emperor Augustus, who was grandnephew ofCaesar and Caesar's designated heir. A struggle for power broke out whenAntony, Octavius, and a third contender for the throne, the Roman generalMarcus Aemilius Lepidus, formed the Second Triumvirate and agreed todivide the Roman Empire among themselves.

In 42 BC, at Philippi, the triumvirate crushed the forces led by twoassassins of Caesar, the Roman statesmen Marcus Junius Brutus and GaiusCassius Longinus, who sought to restore the Roman Republic. Later in thesame year, Antony summoned the Egyptian queen Cleopatra to attend him inthe city of Tarsus, in Cilicia (now in Turkey), and explain her refusalto aid the triumvirate in the civil war. Instead of punishing Cleopatra,however, Antony fell in love with her and returned with her to Egypt in41 BC. In 40 BC he attended meetings of the triumvirate in Italy, atwhich a new division of the Roman world was arranged, with Antonyreceiving the eastern portion, from the Adriatic Sea to the EuphratesRiver; in the same year he attempted to cement his relations withOctavius by marrying the latter's sister Octavia. Nevertheless, Antonysoon returned to Egypt and resumed his life with Cleopatra. Octavius madeuse of this fact to excite the indignation of the Roman people againstAntony. When, in 36 BC, Antony was defeated in a military expeditionagainst the Parthians, popular disapproval of his conduct deepened inRome, and a new civil war became inevitable. In 31 BC the forces ofAntony and Cleopatra were decisively defeated by those of Octavius in anaval engagement near Actium.

The couple returned to Egypt, deserted by the Egyptian fleet and by mostof Antony's own army. In the following year, besieged by the troops ofOctavius in Alexandria and deceived by a false report of Cleopatra'ssuicide, Antony killed himself by falling on his sword.
