General Notes: Byname SHAPUR THE GREAT, 10th king of the Sasanian Empire of Persia, whowithstood Roman strength by astute military strategy and diplomacy andbrought the empire to the zenith of its power.
Early life and accession.
The name Shapur, meaning "son of a king," was common in the Sasanianperiod and was often given to sons other than princes. Numericaldesignations were not used to distinguish kings of the same name;instead, the family genealogy was cited. Thus, in one inscription, Shapurstyles himself, the Mazdah-worshipping god Shapur, king of kings of Iranand non-Iran, who is a scion of the Gods, the son of Hormizd (Ormizd II),the grandson of Narses.
According to tradition, his father died before Shapur was born, and thechild was proclaimed king by the Persian nobility at his birth in 309, inpreference to his brothers. After a regency, he apparently took the realminto his own hands in 325 at the age of 16.
Persecution of Christians.
In 337 Shapur sent his forces across the Tigris River, the uneasyfrontier, to recover Armenia and Mesopotamia, which his predecessors hadlost to the Romans. Until 350 conflict raged in northern Mesopotamia,with neither side a clear-cut victor. Shortly after 337, Shapur took animportant policy decision. Although the state religion of the SasanianEmpire was Mazdaism (Zoroastrianism), Christianity flourished within itsboundaries. The Roman emperor Constantine the Great had grantedtoleration to Christians in 313. With the subsequent Christianization ofthe empire, Shapur, mistrustful of a potential force of a fifth column athome while he was engaged abroad, ordered the persecution and forcibleconversion of the Christians; this policy was in force throughout hisreign.
In 358 he was ready for a second encounter with Rome and sent anambassador to the emperor Constantius II, bearing presents and a letterwrapped in white silk. This letter read, in part, I Sapor, king of kings,partner of the stars, brother of the sun and the moon, to ConstantiusCaesar my brother send much greeting . . . Because . . . the language oftruth ought to be unrestrained and free, and because
men in the highest rank ought only to say what they mean, I will reducemy propositions into a few words . . . Even your own ancient records bearwitness that my ancestors possessed all the country up to the Strymon andthe frontier of Macedonia. And these lands it is fitting that I who (notto speak arrogantly) am superior to those ancient kings in magnificence,and in all eminent virtues, should now reclaim. But I am at all timesthoughtful to remember that, from my earliest youth, I have never doneanything to repent of.
When Constantius politely refused to hand over these lands, Shapurmarched into northern Mesopotamia, this time with marked success. In 363,however, the emperor Julian led a huge army into Persia, creating havocand advancing to the very gates of Ctesiphon on the Tigris, a majorSasanian city. Julian was mortally wounded in a skirmish, and hissuccessor, Jovian, was compelled to accept an ignominious 30 years' truceand surrender of five Roman provinces.
Conquest of Armenia.
Shapur then turned his attention to Armenia. He defeated its pro-Romanruler and attempted to force Zoroastrianism on the country. The Romans,however, regained their influence in Armenia, and a precarious balancebetween Romans and Persians existed from about 374. For five years,Armenia was weakened by internecine strife, and one of Shapur's last actswas to win it over by discreet gifts. Shapur's death in 379 left Persiawith its territory considerably augmented: he had pacified the easternfrontier and gained control over Armenia; the Persian Empire had neverbeen stronger. But war with Rome had become habitual and eventuallyundermined the strength of the Sasanians.
As did the other great rulers of his line, Shapur considered himself anheir of the great Achaemenid Empire and strove to renew its glory.Indeed, his letter to Constantius contains a distant echo of the wordingof the inscriptions of Darius I the Great, the Achaemenid ruler, when hewrites of his devotion to truth and righteousness. Shapur was called agod, and he lived up to this exalted status, becoming irascible, evenviolent, when individuals summoned to his presence appeared to payinsufficient respect to his awesome majesty.
The figure of Shapur survives. A large silver plate has a scene in reliefthat shows him hunting lions with bow and arrow, and countless silvercoins portray his face in profile. At Bishapur in southwestern Iran, atremendous rock-cut relief depicts him seated on a throne and witnessinga triumph of his army: in the top row he is flanked by nobles of thecourt, and the lower row contains soldiers who present captives andtrophies of victory.

REF: "Britannia Internet Magazine": Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthydisciple of Jesus, who, according to the book of Matthew 27:57-60, askedPontius Pilate for permission to take Jesus' dead body in order toprepare it for burial. He also provided the tomb where the crucified Lordwas laid until his Resurrection.
Joseph is mentioned in a few times in parallel passages in Mark, Luke andJohn, but nothing further is heard about his later activities. Legend,however, supplies us with the rest of his story by claiming that Joseph,accompanying the Apostle Philip on a preaching mission to Gaul, was sentto Britain for the purpose of converting the island to Christianity. Theyear 63 AD is commonly given for this "event", with 37 AD sometimes beingput forth as an alternative. It was said that Joseph achieved his wealthin the metals trade, and in the course of conducting his business, heprobably became acquainted with Britain, at least the southwestern partsof it. Cornwall was a chief mining district and well-known in the Romanempire for its tin and other metals. Some have even said that Joseph wasthe uncle of Jesus, and that he may have brought the young boy along onone of his business trips to the island. It was only natural, then, thatJoseph should have been chosen for the first mission to Britain, andappropriate that he
should come first to Glastonbury, that gravitational center for legendaryactivity in the West Country.
Much more was added to Joseph's legend during the middle ages, and he wasgradually inflated into a major saint and cult hero. For example, he issaid to have brought with him either a cup, said to have been used at theLast Supper and also used to catch the blood dripping from Christ as hehung on the Cross. A variation of this story is that Joseph brought withhim two cruets, one containing the blood and the other, the sweat ofChrist. Either of these items are known as The Holy Grail, and were theobject(s) of the quests of the Knights of King Arthur's Round Table. Thelegend goes on to suggest that Joseph hid the "Grail" in Chalice Well atGlastonbury for safe-keeping. There is a wide variance of scholarlyopinion on this subject, however, and a good deal of doubt exists as towhether Joseph ever came to Britain at all, for any purpose..

Gregory the Illuminator is the apostle, national saint, and patron ofArmenia. He was not the first who introduced Christianity into thatcountry. The Armenians maintain that the faith was preached there by theApostles Bartholomew and Thaddaeus. Thaddaeus especially (the hero of thestory of King Abgar of Edessa and the portrait of Christ) has been takenover by the Armenians, with the whole story. Abgar in their versionbecomes a King of Armenia; thus their land is the first of all to turnChristian. It is certain that there were Christians, even bishops, inArmenia before St. Gregory. The south Edessa and Nisibis especially,which accounts for the Armenian adoption of the Edessene story. A certainDionysius of Alexandria (248-265) wrote them a letter "about penitence"(Euseb., "Hist. Eccl.", VI, xlvi). This earliest Church was thendestroyed by the Persians. Ardashir I, the founder of the Sassaniddynasty (226), restored, even extended, the old power of Persia. Armenia,always the exposed frontier state between Rome and Persia, was overrun byArdashir's army (Khosrov I of Armenia had taken the side of the oldArsacid dynasty); and the principle of uniformity in the Mazdeanreligion, that the Sassanids made a chief feature of their policy, wasalso applied to the subject kingdom. A Parthian named Anak murderedKhosrov by Ardashir's orders, who then tried to exterminate the wholeArmenian royal family. But a son of Khosrov, Trdat (Tiridates), escapedwas trained in the Roman army, and eventually came back to drive out thepersians and restore the Armenian kingdom.
In this restoration St. Gregory played an important part. He had beenbrought up as a Christian at Caesarea in Cappadocia. He seems to havebelonged to an illustrious Armenian family. He was married and had twosons (called Aristakes and Bardanes in the Greek text of Moses ofKkhorni; see below). Gregory, after being himself persecuted by KingTrdat, who at first defended the old Armenian religion, eventuallyconverted him, and with him spread the Christian faith throughout thecountry. Trdat became so much a Christian that he made Christianity thenational faith; the nobility seem to have followed his example easily,then the people followed -- or were induced to follow -- too. Thishappened while Diocletian was emperor (284-305), so that Armenia has aright to her claim of being the first Christian State. The temples weremade into churches and the people baptized in thousands. So completelywere the remains of the old heathendom effaced that we know practicallynothing about the original Armenian religion (as distinct from Mazdeism),except the names of some gods whose temples were destroyed or converted(the chief temple at Ashtishat was dedicated to Vahagn, Anahit andAstlik; Vanatur was worshipped in the North round Mount Ararat, etc.).Meanwhile Gregory had gone back to Caessarea to be ordained. Leontius ofCaesarea made him bishop of the Armenians; from this time till theMonophysite schism the Church of Armenia depended on Casearea, and theArmenian primates (called Catholicoi, only much later patriarchs) wentthere to be ordained. Gregory set up other bishops throughout the landand fixed his residence at Ashtishat (in the province of Taron), wherethe temple had been made into the church of Christ, "mother of allArmenian churches". He preached in the national language and used it forthe liturgy. This, too, helped to give the Armenian Church the markedlynational character that it still has, more, perhaps, than any other inChristendom. Towards the end of his life he retired and was succeeded asCatholicos by his son Aristakes. Aristakes was present at the FirstGeneral Council, in 325. Gregory died and was buried at Thortan. Amonastery was built near his grave. His relics were afterwards taken toConstantinople, but apparently brough back again to Armenia. Part ofthese relics are said to have been taken to Naples during the Iconoclasttroubles.
This is what can be said with some certainty about the Apostle ofArmenia; but a famous life of him by Aganthangelos (see below)embellishes the narrative with wonderful stories that need not be takenvery seriously. According to this life, he was the son of the ParthianAnak who had murdered King Khosrov I. Anak in trying to escape wasdrowned in the Araxes with all his family except two sons, of whom onewent to Persia, the other (the subject of this article) was taken by hisChristian nurse to Caesarea and there baptized Gregory, in accordancewith what she had been told in vision. Soon after his marriage, Gregoryparted from his wife (who became a nun) and came back to Armenia. Here herefused to take part in a great sacrifice to the national gods ordered byKing Trdat, and declared himself a Christian. He was then tortured invarious horrible ways, all the more when the king discovered that he wasthe son of his father's murderer. After being subjected to a variety oftortures (they scourged him, and put his head in a bag of ashes, pouredmolten lead over him, etc.) he was thrown into a pit full of dead bodies,poisonous filth, and serpents. He spent fifteen years in this pit, beingfed by bread that a pious widow brought him daily. Meanwhile Trdat goesfrom bad to worse. A holy virgin named Rhipsime, who resists the king'sadvances and is martyred, here plays a great part in the story.Evenetually, as a punishment for his wickedness, the king is turned intoa boar and possessed by a devil. A vision now reveals to the monarch'ssisters that nothing can save him but the prayers of Gregory. At first noone will attend to this revelation, since they all think Gregory deadlong ago. Eventually they seek and find him in the pit. He comes out,exorcizes the evil spirit and restores the king, and then beginspreaching. Here a long discourse is put into the saint's mouth -- so longthat it takes up more than half his life. It is simply a compendium ofwhat the Armenian Church believed at the time that it was written (fifthcentury). It begins with an account of Bible history and goes on todogmatic theology. Arianism, Nestorianism and all the other heresies upto Monophysite times are refuted. The discourse bears the stamp of thelatter half of the fifth century so plainly that, even without the factthat earlier writers who quote Agathangelos (Moses of Khorni, etc.) donot know it, no one could doubt that it is the composition of an Armeniantheologian of that time, inserted into the life that was already fullenough of wonders. Nevertheles this "Confession of Gregory theIlluminator" was accepted as authentic and used as a kind of officialcreed by the Armenian Church during all the centuries that followed. Evennow it is only the more liberal theologians among them who dispute itsgenuiness.
The life goes on to tell us of Gregory's fast of seventy days thatfollowed his rescue from the pit, of the conversion, and of theirjourneys throughout the land with the army to put down paganism. Thefalse gods fight against the army like men or devils, but are alwaysdefeated by Trdat's arms and Gregory's prayers and are eventually driveninto the Caucasus. The story of the saint's ordination and of theestablishment of the hierarchy is told with the same adornment. Hebaptized four million persons in seven days. He ordained and sent outtwelve apostolic bishops, and sons of heathen priests. Eventually heruled a church of four hundred bishops and priests too numerous to count.He and Trdat hear of Constantine's conversion; they set out with an armyof 70,000 men to congratulate him. Constantine, who had just beenbaptized at Rome by Pope Silvester, forms an alliance with Trdat; thepope warmly welcomes Gregory (there are a number of forged lettersbetween Silvester and Gregory, see below) -- and so on. It would not bedifficult to find the models for all these stories. Gregory in the pitacts like Daniel in the lion's den. Trdat as a boar is Nabuchodonosor;the battles of the king's army against the heather and their gods haveobvious precedents in the Old Testament. Gregory is now Elias, nowIsaias, now John the Baptist, till his sending out his twelve apostlessuggests a still greater model. The writer of the life calls himselfAgathangelos, chamberlain or secretary of King Trdat. It was composedfrom vaious sources after the year 456 (see Gutschmid, below) inArmenian, though sources may have been partly Greek or Syriac (cf.Lagarde). The life was soon translated into Greek used by SymeonMetaphrastes, and further rendered into Latin in the tenth century.During the Middle Ages this life was the invariable source for thesaint's history. The Armenians (Monophysites and Uniates) keep the feastof their apostle on 30 September, when his relics were deposed atThortan. They have many other feasts to commemorate his birth (August 5),sufferings (February 4), going into the pit ( February 28), coming out ofthe pit (October 19), etc. (Niles "Kalendarium Manuale", 2nd ed.,Innsbruck 1897, II, 577). The Byzantine Church keeps his feast (Gregoriosho phoster) on 30 September, as do also the Syrians (Nilles, I, 290-292).Pope Gregory XVI, in September, 1837, admitted his namesake to the RemanCalendar; and appointed 1 October as his feast (among the festa proaliquibus locis).
