Zeus gaveTros a couple of immortal horses and a vine made of gold, to compensatefor abducting the king's son.

The Dardanian people were then divided into two separate groups, betweenhis two other sons by Callirrhoë (Callirrhoe): Ilus and Assaracus.Assaracus succeeded his father and continued to rule at Dardania, whileIlus chose to move closer to the sea. Ilus founded the city that he namedIlium, after himself. Ilium was, however, often called Troy, after hisfather. The two brothers began to rule two separate houses.

On the Dardanian line, Assaracus' son, Capys, married Themiste, daughterof Ilus and Eurydice. Capys became the father of Anchises. Anchises was alover of Aphrodite, who bore him a son and hero, Aeneas. Zeus struckAnchises with a thunderbolt, when he boasted of having slept with thelove-goddess. He became a cripple, unable to walk. His son ruled Dardaniain his place. Aeneas was the only leader, who fought on the Trojan side,to survive the Trojan War.

From 367 to 365, Philip was a hostage in Thebes, and during that periodhe observed the military techniques of Thebes, then the greatest power inGreece. In 364 he returned to Macedonia. In 359 he was made regent forhis infant nephew Amyntas; later that year he seized the throne forhimself.
Faced by internal dissensions and attacked on all sides, Philipreorganized the Macedonian army on the model of the Theban phalanx. Inless than two years he had secured the safety of his kingdom and firmlyestablished himself on the throne. From then on his policy wasaggressive. In 357 he conquered the Athenian colony of Amphipolis inThrace, gaining possession of the gold mines of Mount Pangaeus,
which financed his subsequent wars. In 356 he captured Potidaea inChalcidice and Pydna on the Gulf of Thermaďkós. In 355 he captured theThracian town of Crenides, which, under its new name, Philippi, soonacquired great wealth and fame.
In 354 Philip conquered Methone and then advanced into Thessaly. By 352he had reached the pass of Thermopylae, which he did not attempt to take,because it was strongly guarded by the Athenians. In 351 the greatAthenian orator Demosthenes delivered the first of his Philippics, aseries of speeches warning the Athenians about the Macedonian menace toGreek liberty. By 348 Philip had conquered Thrace
and Chalcidice. Two years later he made peace with Athens, which had beenat war with him in defense of its ally, the Chalcidian city Olynthus.
Philip was next requested by the Thebans to interfere in the sacred waragainst Phocis. He marched into Phocis in 346 and destroyed its cities.Thereafter Macedonia replaced Phocis in the Amphictyonic League, givingPhilip the right to participate in Greek political affairs; in 338 thecouncil appointed Philip commander of the league forces. The Athenians,aroused by Demosthenes, united with the Thebans against Philip, but theircombined army was utterly defeated in 338 at the Battle of Chaeronea.Philip's victory made him complete master of Greece. From 367 to 365, Philip was a hostage in Thebes, and during that period

General Notes: Laomedon was known for his arrogance and impiety and as one who refusedto honor his promises. Poseidon and Apollo, possibly punished forrebelling against Zeus, had to work for one year for a mortal. The twogods disguised as builders, were hired to work alongside with a mortal,Aeacus, son of Zeus and Aegina, (father of Peleus and Telamon), to buildthe walls of Troy. Poseidon and Apollo wanted the vine of gold as paymentfor their work. Laomedon agreed. After the gods finished building thewall, Laomedon refused to pay their wages for their services. Apollocaused the plague within the city, while Poseidon send a sea-monster toravage the Trojan countryside.

The seers told Laomedon, that the land would be spare, if the kingsacrificed his daughter to the sea-monster. Chaining his daughter,Hesione and waited for monster to arrive. Heracles, who was performingthe ninth labour (fetching the girdle of Hippolyte), stopped at Troy.Learning what was about to happen, Heracles wanted Laomedon's immortalhorses in exchange for rescuing his daughter. Laomedon agreed. Afterkilling the monster, again Laomedon refused to pay. Heracles angry at theTrojan king's betrayal on his promise, planned to return with an army,after he finish performing the twelve labours.

Heracles raised an army in Tiryns, returned with and the Argonaut hero,Telamon of Salamis, son of Aeacus. After capturing the city, Laomedon waskilled, along with many of his sons, and Heracles gave Heisone to Telamonas concubine. She allowed Hesione to ransomed one captive. Hesioneransomed her youngest brother Podarces, with her veil. Podarces becameking of Troy, and changed his name to Priam (Ransom).
