John Sanders History

John Sanders was the son of Richard Sanders and Margarett Wignoll SandersMorgan. John was bom just prior to his mother's marriage in 1636 toWilliam Morgan. John grew up James City County on property his motherbrought to the marriage with William Morgan. John's childhood would havebeen extremely hard, a constant fight for survival, with work for allages, dawn to dusk, every day, with never an end in sight. In 1638, hisfather's cousin, Isabell Sanders was brought from England, along withothers and William Morgan claimed an additional 600 acres of land.

With the arrival of his aunt, John would have another person other thanhis mother to tell him stories of the family in England. It appears theseladies performed their task well, for there are names in our family thatreach back to England. John also learned the stories for there are namesused in early Virginia that remain in history today. While we know thatJohn learned his family history well, due to the times and burdens onall, John grew up without an education. He was unable to read or write.John would have been told about his great grandmother who went to livewith her daughter who had married a Spelman that had property inMarlborough. He would have learned about Thomas West, Lord de la Warr, about Lord de la Warr voyages to Virginia and his death on his lastvoyage. He would have told about Robert Saunders, a member of OliverCromwell armies having been appointed Governor ofKinsale in Ireland. Allabout his family having lived in England and Wales for over 300 years andof the various properties and titles involved with the family.

John Sanders remained with his mother until adulthood. He courted and wonthe hand of Susanna Ravenett in marriage. Susanna Ravenett was thedaughter of William Ravenett, who had served as one of John Rolfe's men.William Ravenett came into his first property in 1635. From the patentrecords, it possible that William Ravenett wife, whose name is unknown tothis day, could have been a Avery. The land William received waspreviously held by Jacob Avery.

On 30 March 1656, by his will William Ravenett deeded to his daughter nowthe wife of John Sanders the following property. In the Cavaliers andPioneers Patent Book 6, Page 71 is recorded: "On E. side of a Springcalled 'Jacob's Well' a gutt dividing this from land ofCapt. Robt.Pyland, adj. Mr. Hely, Alsupp's fence near the cart path & c. 500 acs.part leased to Jacob Avery 2 Feb 1630, for 21 yrs., afterwards granted toWilliam Ravenett by 3 Patients: 150 acres 21 Nov 1635, 240 acs. 23 Sept1636,100 acs. 20 Feb 1638, who gave to his daughter Susanna now wifeofsd. Sanders by his will dated 30 Mar 1656." By the wording of the will,it establishes that John Sanders and Susanna Ravenett was wed prior todate of the documented will. All of this property lay in Warwick County,Mulberry Island Parish. Virginia.

On 14th of January 1656 John Sanders had a Ralph Poole enter suit inSurry County for recovery of tobacco on he and his mother's behalf. Thesuit was successful and a large amount of tobacco was recovered. Note:See Notes on John Sanders Surry County Trial

John Sanders and his wife Susanna Ravenett had two (2) sons that we knowof from their marriage between 1652 tol656. The sons will be identifiedin our records as Richard Sanders and John Sanders, II. They would havebeen bom by 1656.

The next event that occurred in John Sanders life was that afterapproximately seventeen years living on the property inherited by hiswife, Susanna Ravenett from her father he decided to re-patent theproperty in his name. In the Cavaliers and Pioneers Patent Book, Page 282a patent for: "Mr. John Sanders, 650 acres, Warwick County, Mulberry Is.Par., on Skiffes Cr. 5th of July 1669. On E. side of a Spring called'Jacob's Well' a gutt dividing this from land ofCapt. Robt. Pyland, adj.Mr. Hely, Alsupps fence near the cart path, & c. 500 acs. part leased toJacob Avery 2 Feb 1630, for 21 years., afterwards granted to WilliamRavenett by 3 patients: 150 acres 21 Nov. 1635. 250 acs. 23 Sept 1636,100 acs 20 Feb 1638, who gave to his daughter Susanna now wife ofsd.Sanders by his will dated 30 Mar 1656. John Sanders added 150 acres forthe trans. of 3 persons."

In the Virginia Colony, a woman could inherit property in her name andretain such property until such time as she would re-marry. Unless aprovision was agreed upon at or before the time of marriage that such apiece of property would remain in her name, a husband could re-patent theproperty in his name and retain such property. A wife under othercircumstances would be eligible to receive her dower rights upon death ofa husband. The only reason that John Sanders would re-patent the propertyin his name was to protect him and his sons. Its very possible at thistime in her life, Susanna could have been ill and there would have been agood chance she would have died. Susanna is not mentioned in any otherdocuments after this period in time.

The next time event that had a great impact on John Sanders life was"Bacon's Rebellion" which was a result of many contributing factors. Thehandling of an Indian uprising in 1644 with was quelled to GovernorBerkeley. The restoration of the monarchy under King Charles II broughtnew stern and stricter policies, which had a huge impact on thecolonist's lives. They were prohibited from trading with any foreigncountry, all tobacco was required to shipped only to England on Englishvessels. This cause great amounts of tobacco to be stored in Virginia, the price declined from 5 shillings (100 pennies) to a few pennies perpound. The cost of goods increased and caused severe hardships on thecolonists. A cattle epidemic in 1672/73 wiped at least a half of theanimals in the colony. War with Holland 1665/67 and from 1672/74increased the hardships on the colonists. Indian trouble broke out againin Stafford County and fears of further uprisings frightened many of thesettlers. Governor Berkeley had the militia investigate the uprising andfive chiefs of a tribe that had been friendly to the colonist were ledaway and executed. Berkeley then levied more taxes on the colonists tobuild forts and increase the militia. Further raids in 1676 lead thecolonists to take matters in their on hands. Nathaniel Bacon along withabout 200 of his supporters and members of the Susquehannocks Indiansattacked the Occaneechees tribe.

The Indians suffered high losses. Now the fight was on, political battlesbetween the Governor and Bacon's followers, armed conflicts andconfrontations ensued.

The end result was the colonists lost a hopeless fight and many were putto death. Some were executed at the Governors orders, others on drumheadtrials with immediate executions. Finally some order was restored andcivil trials began. Here John Sanders was brought before a court and thefindings were. John Sanders, "a notorious actor in the late rebellion"was pardoned at Green Spring Plantation on 1 March 1676/77, but was fined2000 pounds of tobacco and "caske to the countrie." The last part ofsentence "caske to the countrie" is unclear as to its meaning. In old ormiddle English "caske" is a noun meaning keg, barrel, etc. In JohnSanders case, I believe it meant that John and his family had to vacantand leave their home in Warwick County. Nothing indicates what happenedto the property, no record, sale or how the property was disposed of hasbeen found.

The next event in the life of John Sanders occurred in 1681, four (4)years after the rebellion. John Sanders, Jonathan Robinson and RichardThomas patented in the Isle of Wight and Nansemond Counties, 1650 acresof land. This was recorded in Patent Book 7, page 72, dated 23rd of April1681 and it involved the transportation of 33 persons. Under the rulesexisting at that time they received 50 acres for each person. Thisproperty was then redistributed with 550 acres going to each of theowners. John Sander's property of 550 acres was recorded as "King Sale"and was located at the Queens Grave Swamp. The name "King Sale" wasprobably taken from an earlier event in English history, when OliverCromwell had appointed a Robert Saunders as Governor ofKinsale inIreland. We attribute the name "King Sale" to teaching of his mother andcousin. A note of interest there is still a community in Virginia locatedon the lower Potomac River and Yeocomico River and this community isnamed Kinsale. There is no apparent connection between "King Sale" andKinsale, Va.

A matter of interest would be the relationship between Richard Thomas,John Sanders I and Jonathan Robinson. This trio probably started out as abusiness venture in land acquisition, it later evolved into somethingquite different. Richard Thomas was married and had a growing family in1681. John Sanders had two grown sons that accompanied him to the Isle ofWight. Jonathan Robinson was a young man and a bachelor at the time ofpatent and division of the land.

Jonathan Robinson married a daughter, Sara Thomas born 1673, daughter ofRichard Thomas whose death occurred in 1687. This union went on toproduce four (4) children. Jonathan remained a neighbor of the Thomas'sand of John Sanders I.

John Sanders was a widower in 1681 when the land venture was started.Later in his life he did marry again, Phoebe Thomas bom 1672, daughter ofRichard Thomas whose death occurred in 1687. This was a marriage betweenMay and December. We don't believe the marriage lasted over a year atbest. Phoebe Thomas after her father's death inherited of her father'sproperty or about 137 acres. It is likely Phoebe received a small pieceof John Sanders property, 100 acres or less. It is well documented thatPhoebe left 75 acres to John Sanders II, daughter Phoebe Sanders, wholater married John Winburne. Phoebe also left approximately 150 acres toJohn Sanders, son of Richard Sanders, who died in 1733.

Note: Phoebe married later a William Curle(Kirl) with whom its said shehad two children. Phoebe Thomas Sanders Curie died about 1706.

Note: Jonathan Robinson and John Sanders I, both ended up brother-in-lawshave married sisters of the Richard Thomas family.

Note: The Thomas family and all members thereof, lived extremely shortlives. In the years the Thomas's were in the colony, no member hadreached his fortieth birthday.

Note: Phoebe Sanders was the probably the youngest child and onlydaughter of John Sanders II, married John Winburne who was the executorof Robert Sanders estate. On May 1, 1751 John Winburne petitioned to sell75 acres of land she had inherited from her grandmother Phoebe Curie in1706. See will of Robert Sanders of further data

Note: See the will of John Sanders, the son of Richard Sanders died inOnslow County, N.C. in 1733. He named his brother Robert Sanders asexecutor and left the land he owned in Nansemond County 150 acres toRobert. Any land he had inherited from his Grandmother Phoebe Curie wasincluded in this endowment.

Note: In modern language Lord de la Warr, would have been known as LordDelaware.

Part 1 - The introduction to William Harris of Jamestown

A few weeks ago, while gathering information about the possibleEnglish
origins of Capt. Thomas Harris, I stumbled across somethingthat turned
out to be a major discovery in a mystery I have long beentrying to
solve. It had nothing to do with Capt. Thomas Harris. It wasabout
William Harris who came to Virginia with William Claiborne in1621. For
over twenty years I have been gathering bits and pieces ofinformation
about this William Harris but I could never really get a senseof
identity on him. It has always appeared that he left nodistinct Harris
descendant lines like the other Harris immigrants. For thisreason, no
one ever seemed interested in finding out who he was orconnecting back
to him. I believe that is about to change.

If you are a descendant of the William Harris/TemperanceOverton line or
the Robert Harris/Mourning Glen line of Hanover County, youwill be very
interested in this. If you are a descendant of the Matthew
Harris/Elizabeth Lee line of Louisa, Albemarle and NelsonCounties and
beyond, you will be interested in this. If you are adescendant of the
George Fuller Harris line of Pittsylvania County, Virginia andLincoln
County, Kentucky, you will be interested in this. I nowbelieve William
Harris, who came to Virginia in 1621, is your immigrant Harrisancestor.

The key to this was discovering the village of Willingale Doein Essex,
England. Willingale Doe is about eight miles west ofChelmsford in
Essex. For those who were upset by my attack on the misuse ofLDS
databases, you will be glad to know that it was discovery ofthe
extracted parish records for Willingale Doe on the LDSInternational
Genealogical Index that first opened the door on all of this.I hope I
have sufficiently "eaten crow" for my misdirected attack. Inow think
the IGI is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Incredibly, what we have within a ONE SQUARE MILE area aroundWillingale
Doe in the year 1600 are the following places:

1. Shellow Bowells - the village where Edward Harris residedfor most of
his adult life. Edward Harris was the youngest overall son ofWilliam
Harris of Southminster by his third wife, Agnes Rutter.

2. Torrell Hall - the home of the Henry Josselyn family and hisdaughter
Anne who married Edward Harris as his second wife in 1583. TheJosselyns
were cousins to the nearby family of Sir Thomas Gates of GoodEaster, who
became one of the early governors of the Virginia colony.

3. Little Burch Hall - the home of the John Butler/JaneElliott family
and their daughter Elizabeth, who was to marry WilliamClaiborne in
Virginia c1635. This family also included Elizabeth's olderbrothers
John and Thomas Butler who both eventually came to Virginia andsettled
in Claiborne's Kent Island settlement in the upper ChesapeakeBay. The
brother of the senior John Butler was Capt. Nathaniel Butler ofnearby
Roxwell who was to become the Governor of Bermuda from 1619 to1622 and
who later sat on the Council of Virginia with WilliamClaiborne.

4. Willingale Doe - the village where we find the parishrecords for the
entire William Harris/Joan Hardings family including their sonWilliam,
who was born in 1596.

When we begin to expand out from these four families and lookat the
marriages of the children and other associated families in theWillingale
Doe, Shellow Bowells and Roxwell parish records, we find anumber of
interconnections between all four of the families. As it turnsout, the
key to discovering our Harris history in England AND Virginialies not in
the association with William Claiborne but in the variousconnections to
the Butler family.

I am first going to propose the entire line as I now believe itoccurred.
It will cover the six generations starting with William Harrisof
Southminster and going through the first three generations inVirginia.
What will follow after that will be a detailed explanation anddiscussion
of existing evidence that hopefully will support myconclusions.

Please understand, this is all new. You will not find thisproposed
anywhere else. I am the first to go down this path. For thisreason, I
do not expect nor desire any of this to be accepted untilothers have
followed the same path and come to similar conclusions. Myobjective in
this is to leave a clear path of evidence and logic that otherscan
follow, but each of you must do the research and arrive at yourown
conclusions.

married 2nd Anne Fuller, widow of George Fuller.

For the most part, all of the information needed to constructthis can be
found in commonly available sources, either online or at mostlarger
libraries. The predominant sources are:
1. The IGI parish records at LDS FamilySearch (batches beginwith prefix
"C" or "M").
2. The Visitations of Essex of 1552 and 1558
3. Cavaliers and Pioneers Volumes I and II (Nugent I and NugentII) -
land patent records.
4. Various volumes of the Virginia Genealogies series (also onFTM CDs or
online at Genealogy.com if you have a subscription).
5. A biography on William Caliborne called Virginia Venturerpublished in
1954, or any other suitable biography on William Claiborne.

I would also suggest a good map of Virginia, preferably theDeLorme Atlas
of topographical maps that exists for each state as well as adetailed
driving atlas of Great Britain showing the towns and villages.
